The door closed and Kaneki loosened his tie with his finger as he walked into his shared room with his beautiful wife, to see her sitting on the bed with their son, Kou in her arms. Touka smiled as she looked up at him. "Welcome back."

He leaned down to give her a kiss on the cheek before gazing at her tenderly with a smile. "I'm home."

Kou squealed happily at the sight of his father and his tiny hands tried to reach for him. Kaneki took Kou from Touka and pressed a kiss to his forehead, making him giggle.

A wife and a family to come home to. It was what he always wanted.

After settling the sleeping Kou into his crib, Kaneki sat down onto the bed and watched as Touka applied her lotion on her creamy skin. His eyes ran over her body. She was wearing the red silk dress he bought her from last Christmas. "So...I need to go overseas again for my work.

Touka frowned and went to sit beside him. "How long this time?"

Though his job now was quite well-paid, she didn't like that they kept on sending her husband overseas. It always made her lonely because he would be gone for weeks at a time.

"1 month."

Her frown deepened. "Can you not go?"

Kaneki heaved a big sigh and enveloped her in his arms. "You know I can't do that."

"I know... I just...I'm going to miss you." She whispered as she closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around him, inhaling his scent.

"I'm going to miss you too. We can skype if you want to."

She sighed. "I know I'm being selfish but I need you. Kou needs you."

He placed his hands on her shoulders and pushed her back gently. Smiling down at her, he pecked her lips. "I'll get my work done as soon as I can and I'll bring you two out when I get back. How's that?"

She returned a smile. "Better."

He caressed her cheek and leaned in for another kiss.

"Come back soon, okay?"

"Okay."

As the plane landed in Paris, Kaneki turned on his phone and sent a text to his wife, saying that he touched down safely. He looked at the time, 7am. It's probably still in the middle of the night in Japan so he figured she wouldn't reply and placed his phone back into his pocket.

He grabbed his luggage and made his way to his hotel.

One week has passed since he landed in Paris. As he busied himself with his work, his mind wandered to Touka. How was she doing? Was she eating well? Was she sleeping well? She always says she can't sleep without him by her side. The same went for him, he could hardly eat or sleep without her. He missed her warmth, her smell and her heartbeat.

After completing a meeting with a client in the evening, Kaneki packed up and got ready to return to his hotel. As he walked along Paris' tree-filled streets, he noticed the large amount of couples on the streets. That was expected, with Paris being the city of love. But how he wished that he was here with Touka, on a holiday instead of being on the job. Then maybe they could walk around town together, visit the Eiffel Tower and have a romantic dinner to end the day.

He made a note to himself to bring her and their son here for their holiday next time. His heart filled with excitement as he couldn't wait to see them again in only 2 more weeks. He missed them oh so dearly.

Upon reaching his hotel room, he took a bath and sat down in front of his laptop. Since he's been occupied with work for the past week, he was frustrated that he wasn't able to skype with Touka as he promised. Now that he had some free time, he decided to call her. He waited 3 rings until she picked up and turned on the video function.

"Hey. I'm so sorry I couldn't call you for the past week. I've been so busy—" he stopped himself there because he knew she didn't care for all these and only wanted to hear a particular phrase. "I missed you."

She immediately smiled. "I miss you too, Ken."

"I can't wait to get back home to see you and Kou. This past week has been painful without you guys. Speaking of Kou, how is he?"

"He's all good. Though he sometimes wanders into your study room to find you."

She didn't need to say anything because one look at her eyes and he could tell the sorrow in them. His eyes stung and he struggled not to let a tear drop.

"Touka... I love you."

"..What's with you all of a sudden?"

Eyes downcast, he explained. "I just...I feel bad about leaving you and Kou all alone. I.. If you don't like this, I can tell my boss to stop sending me overseas. I'm sure he would understand because I have a family to take care of."

"It's okay, Ken. I know you're doing for us. I just miss you here with me. It's lonely in bed without you." Touka replied, gloom in her voice.

His right hand's fingers wandered to the wedding ring on his left hand. "I missed you too. I can't sleep without you. Have you been eating well? I'm sorry I can't be with you when you just gave birth. I'm supposed to be by your side."

She shook her head. Though she wants to tell him that it's okay and he needs to stop apologizing, her tears dripped down. She cursed because she promised not to cry in front of him. Clicking on the video button, she turned it off but forgot to turn off the microphone. Kaneki could hear her sobs from his side and he also let his tears drop.

Usually he'd been gone for at most 3 weeks. But this time, it's 1 month and clearly it's taking a toll on the both of them. They are newlyweds and they were supposed to spend more time together. But his job was very demanding and he's already been overseas 4 times this year. It's almost Christmas and yet he can't be with his family to celebrate it with them. He also missed Touka's and his son's birthday because he was overseas.

It was not easy for Touka either. Every time she comes home from her part-time work, she sees Kou sitting in Kaneki's study room, always staring at the desk her husband uses. She doesn't know how many times she had to stop herself from breaking down in front of Kou because she knows she has to be strong for him.

Every time she enters their shared bedroom, she would remember how he loved to hug her from behind to surprise her that he's home and how he loved showering her with kisses on her face, her lips and her neck in their intimate moments. She missed the way his body wrapped around hers when they slept, how his breath was always on the back of her neck and how safe she felt when she was in his arms.

The both of them cried themselves to sleep that night because of their strong longing for each other.

It's now 3 weeks into Paris and Kaneki is on the verge of breaking down. Not being able to sleep without his wife, it's clearly taking a toll on his body. His eye bags were getting heavier by the day and his body felt like it was going to collapse. As he walked along the streets, he didn't bother looking around like the first time and could only think about returning to the hotel as soon as possible so he can throw his body on the bed and force himself to sleep.
