"Ah." The violet haired female sighed as the coin she tried to take out of her wallet fell and rolled on the floor. She had wanted to buy a drink from the vending machine but now she has to find her coin. Ugh.
Some students saw that and snickered. They talked amongst each other. "Hey did you know? That girl's blind! I wonder how she even came to Kamii! Maybe she cheated!"
"Haha that's possible! Maybe she bribed someone and got in!"
She heard that but she did not let those words get to her. All her life, it has been like that. People insulted and made fun of her being blind wherever she went so she has built up some kind of resistance to this already. Nevertheless, those words were still harsh.
As she was groping the floor with her hands trying to find her coin, a hand reached out to grab the coin and held it out for her. "Is this yours?"
The male noticed as she stared in his direction but it's like she's not seeing him. He grabbed her hand, allowing her to touch the coin in his hand and rephrased his question. "Is this 100 yen coin yours?"
Feeling the texture of the coin, she said, "Yes, it is. Thank you for picking it up." Thanking him, she took the coin from him and stood up. He followed, standing up and stared as she inserted the coin into the machine. He noticed it again, she's staring but it's like she can't see what's in front. He then came to a conclusion. She must be blind.
"What drink do you want?" He asked.
"Green tea."
He clicked on the button that represented green tea and the bottle dropped. Picking it up for her, she thanked him once again.
"What's your name? I'm Kaneki Ken."
"Kirishima Touka."
"Kirishima-San, can I be your friend?"
She was taken aback by his question. "Why would you want to be my friend? You know I'm blind right? Do you pity me?" Through her words, he could tell that she's been hurt before.
"It's not that I pity you. I just want to be your friend. Is that not allowed?" Kaneki asked, a slight sorrow in his words.
"Do whatever you want. Friends just betray you in the end..." It's a murmur but he heard it loud and clear.
"I promise I won't betray you." Kaneki declared.
Hah. Let's see about that. Touka found it hard to believe that he would stick around.
---
But he kept true to his words. He was a great friend. Every time during break or lunch, he would go find her, tell her jokes, tell her what the scenery looked like, the colors, everything she asked him. He's always so positive, vibrant and even though he likes to talk about books which would bore her to death, she doesn't hate the time spent with him. The longer she spent time with him, the more she wants to stay with him.
---
The two friends sat beside each other on a bench, enjoying the afternoon breeze. Closing her eyes, Touka inhaled. "Kaneki do you think I'm pretty?"
Silence came.
"I knew it. It was a dumb question. Sorry. Just ignore what I just said. Of course I'm ugly."
Kaneki pouted. He hates when she's like this, putting herself down before giving herself a chance. It's a bad habit of hers and he finds it really hard to change it. He turned to her and cupped her cheeks. "Touka don't say that. Believe me when I say that you are beautiful and I won't take being blind as an excuse."
