Trigger Warning: Abuse and Death

Maria hid the letters Angelica had sent her in a bag, sliding that under a wooden plank as she tried to calm down. James was due back from his business trip soon and she was terrified, he was an aggressive man and she didn't want him back so soon. He was never kind to her but marrying him saved her family in the long run so she would deal with it, it meant her brothers and sisters could get an education and marry well.

Above everything, Maria wished she had been born a man so she might have a chance with the love of her life, Angelica Schuyler. They had met on accident when Maria went for a walk and since then they had kept up letter correspondence with each other and spent many nights together, many passionate nights too.

Maria sighed and sat in the parlor of the Reynolds estate, her face still covered in bruises. Angelica knew James mistreated Maria but she didn't know the extent of it otherwise she would've stepped in by now. Maria used to blame herself but not anymore, she knew who was to really blame. He found every excuse to blame her for him hitting her, it didn't make sense anymore but it used to. She didn't react in time, didn't make dinner in time, she didn't kiss properly. It went on and on.

He just liked hitting her and it wasn't her fault, that much was fact. She sighed and got up, heading to the kitchen as it was approaching lunch time and she knew her place. She got to work, she decided on some steak and applesauce. It was quite an American dinner and knowing James, she added a beer for him. She made sure to work fast and soon she was bringing the concoction to James who was hard at work in his study, organizing real estate deals and the like. She knocked softly on the door, "Who the fuck is it?!" James screamed through the wood.

"It's-It's me.." She replied meekly, her hands trembling, "I-I made you some lunch..it's noon." She waited for him to say something before going in as she always did, he wasn't the kind to walk in on.

Moments passed like a century and every second the silence dragged on the more fear Maria felt exploding inside her gut until finally, James said a curt but gruff, "Come in." And honestly, she was glad he said something. Maria opened the door and headed inside, setting the tray in front of him on the desk where he often told her to. James looked over what she made before commenting, "Why the hell isn't the steak cut up?"

Maria was afraid, he had the tone of voice he took when he was about to hurt her or somebody else. She tried to explain quietly, "I didn't know if y-you wanted it cut up so I uh I brought you a steak knife too, see?" She gestured to the utensil, "So if you wanted you could do it yourself or-"

"-MYSELF?!" She cowered back, she'd said the wrong thing, "What?! Are you too busy fucking every goddamn broad and dick that comes your way that you can't do one fucking thing?!" Maria grew more frightened and he grabbed the knife making her back up as her eyes widened in fear, "I fucking hate that look! That look in your fucking eyes!"

James grabbed her throat and pushed her against a wall as he readied the knife, "James please!" Maria screamed, the point of the knife almost touching her wide eye, "I-I'll cut it up! James don't! Please d-" She broke off into a high pitched scream as he stabbed her eye, falling to her knees and putting a hand on it, the knife still there.

"Shut the fuck up!" He kicked her and she fell to her side, still holding her injured eye as it bled bucketfuls into her hand. James kicked her and kicked her but she wasn't going to take this lying down anymore. Maria jumped up and ran, "Where the fuck do you think you're going?!" James yelled after but she kept running, her eye losing a lot of blood.

Maria reached Angelica's residence, she lived alone for independence. Angelica opened the door before she too screamed, "Maria holy shit!" Maria remembered going black as she collapsed, arms caught her but she just went blank.

Hours later Maria woke up with no depth perception. She reached up to her right eye to check and found bandages, "A-Angie?" She sat up and a groan, her head exploding as she looked around for her lover.

A flurry of pink ran in and soon Maria found Angelica kneeling next to her, the woman's face red as she breathed heavy. She'd obviously been running around and exerting herself for Maria's sake, "Yes? What do you need? Do you need anything? Who did this to you?"

Maria blinked, or, did she wink? Whatever. She looked away and shrugged, "I-I told you James was mean to me..didn't I?" She mumbled, her only eye starting to tear up as she tried to forget him.

"Oh my God you meant..." Angelica covered her mouth before her eyes hardened, "I'm going to kill him." She said simply. Maria looked at her in shock but Angelica had already gotten up and gone to a bookshelf, getting a box down that she then pulled a gun from.

"A-Angie!" Maria jumped up and hurried over, watching Angelica load the gun. They shared a look and Maria realized her determination so she mumbled, "I-I wanna come too..." She said quietly.

"Alright I guess," Angie said and took Maria's hand, hiding the gun in her bust as they left the estate on their way to the Reynolds grange. When they arrived Angelica didn't bother with pleasantries, she kicked the door in and marched inside, "James!" She shouted. James marched down grumpily but stopped dead when Angelica pulled the gun on him, aiming it in between his eyes, "You took her eye, a part of her life, so I'm going to take yours.

James stumbled back and Maria was shocked to find true fear in his eyes but she'd be lying if she said she cared. No, she hid behind Angelica as he begged, "H-How about an eye for an eye, eh?"

Angelica looked at him blankly, "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." She told him before squeezing the trigger. Maria screamed and Angelica immediately turned around and held her against her chest, "I love you, Maria, more than life."

Maria nodded slowly and held onto her dress as she cried, was she free? She'd have this scar on her eye for life, it would only remind her of him, but he couldn't hit her again. The future could wait, for now, she wanted to just cry on Angelica's shoulder as Angie repeated I love yous and sweet nothings.
