While mom cooked, I made the table. Arden did her normal routine of trying to make me play fetch as Lucas stuffed his face in a book. "Come on, River. Play with me," Arden whined.
"No, Arden. I'm not a dog," I angrily said before turning around to grab the blood and tea off the counter to the table.
"But you are," she said with a smile.
"Arden," mom said warning her that if she said another word, she was done for.
"But it's true! She's a werewolf. Hey how come we never seen you turn," Arden took her attention from mom to me. I only rolled my eyes and walked out of the room towards the living room. I wasn't surprised that my little sister followed me. "Come on. Turn. Or are you just lying about being a werewolf."
"I didn't tell you, mom told you. And I'm a Lycan not a werewolf, there is a big difference."
"Is not," she said.
"Yes there is," Lucas looked up from his book, "Lycan's look like ugly wolves that stand on two feet and are almost bolding looking. Unlike werewolves whom just look like regular wolves."
"Thanks Lucas, for calling me ugly," I said not really meaning it.
"Your welcome," he smiled taking his attention back to his book.
"Okay," Arden said, "If you are a Lycan then prove it."
I sighed as I looked away, what was with her? I can't even shift yet, my ears twitched at the sound of a car driving down the road. "Dad's home," I whispered.
"His not here," she said. She tilted her head towards the front door as a smile slowly crept on her face. "Daddy's home!" she said as his car turned into the driveway.
Rolling my eyes mom and the twins ran for the door. I walked towards the door and I folded my arms. Dad was on one knee holding the twins in a warm embrace. Mom was whipping her hands with a towel in her hand as she said, "Welcome home, honey."
He got up and gave mom a long kiss before pulling away with a smile, "Thank you."
It was like this all time. A picture of the perfect family through the open door but once it was closed. There was dark secrets, hidden deep within. A wolf child, a vampire family living in the woods. But on one knows that because all us kids are home schooled. Only dad goes to town to work and when he is home mom with go out shopping. Never once does my parents leave us without one of them watching us. I wouldn't blame them. But tomorrow we will be going back.
"Dinner is almost ready. Why don't you change," mom told dad as they started to walk into the house.
"That would be nice," he smiled giving her another kiss, on the cheek. I moved to the side to let them come in. Arden and Lucas ran in the house first and headed to the kitchen as mom followed. Dad was the last one in the house. Shutting the door behind him he adjusted his tie and sighed. "Hello River."
"Hi dad."
"How are you?"
"Fine," I said.
"Just fine?" he asked raising his eyebrow. I nodded my head. "You know what tomorrow is, right"
"Yes," I knew well what tomorrow was.
His eyes drifted to the floor, putting his hand on my shoulder, he walked away as he whispered, "I love you."
"I love you too," I whispered looking down to the floor.
Tomorrow was the day that I leave this family. When I shift for the first time and look for a mate outside the tribe. And once I find him I can never return home. Only dad knows of this. If mom knew should would try everything to make sure I never left her. But this was the life of my kind.
With all my heart I didn't want this. Finding a mate, but it's something I can't run away from. Not even Aunt Rachelle could run away from such a fate.
Once dinner was done with mom have put the kids to bed. With the twins lying in their beds I watched mom kiss them on the cheek from the corner of my eye as I walked passed the door towards my room. Once I reached my door I placed my hand on the nob, glancing down the hall, mom walked out of the twin's room and quietly closed the door with a smile.
When she glanced towards me I quickly opened my door, out my head down and walked in the room. I couldn't face her. Shutting the door behind me I gently placed my back against it. Holding back tears, there was so much I wanted to tell her. So much I wanted to say but how could I tell her.
There was secrets that both dad and I kept. But will I be able to do it. Find a mate and never come back. Would she forgive me? She would but I would never forgive myself. I need to protect her, my brother and sister, dad, I don't want to leave.
No, I won't leave. Who says we Lycans have to find a mate. There is so much I have to do. And on top of that list was 'get Melantha'.
Fun Fact: Did you know that Melantha means "Black Flower". Get it, the first book. I forgot all about it. I was looking up names for some of our new characters that we will meet and I came across this.
