Roots in the North by TheOldUnseenGuyHere

This is a first for me. I am endeavoring to write a series of poems to honour and celebrate the courage and hardships of my ancestors. This volume is to commemorate the Craigie Family who are my ancestors through my maternal grandmother Mary Lydia Isabella Elisa Craigie Stuart. The Craigies were victims of the Scottish Land Clearances 1780 - 1850. They were crofters forced from their ancestral home because the Nobility who controlled the Orkney island of Rousay wanted to convert the island into a sheep station. They were told they had to move because their homes were insanitary. With nowhere to work they were forced to sell all and emigrate to New Zealand. Written after Wattpad member Seasofme challenged me to expand the theme of earlier poems.

Completed.
