Kai grinned and turned the handlebars of his game controller. The motorcycle racers were his favorite game at this arcade, and he had the high score to prove it.
On the screen, Kai's motorcycle twisted and turned through the racing course, well ahead of the three riders controlled by the computer. He was already mentally celebrating his new high score when a voice broke his concentration.
"That's the weirdest hair I've ever seen."
Kai jerked in surprise, crashing his rider, then turned around. A girl about his age, with h/l h/c hair, e/c/ eyes, and a f/c hoodie was leaning against a nearby pinball machine. When she saw him looking, she folded her arms and smirked knowingly.
"Hey!" Kai protested. "I work hard to make it look like this!" Not that he could get it to do anything else.
The girl's smirk grew wider. "Why don't you just roll out of bed? It'll save you a lot of trouble, and it looks exactly the same."
Kai rolled his eyes as he realized that he'd walked into that. "You sound like my online pen pal."
The girl cocked her head slightly. "You sound like my online pen pal."
No way. No possible way. Kai shrugged mentally to himself. Only one way to find out.
"Kai, a.k.a. HotHead," he said, holding out a hand.
"Y/n, a.k.a. y/u," the girl replied in the exact same tone of voice. She reached out and shook Kai's hand.
Kai felt a small thrill of excitement. After all, what were the chances that that he'd just randomly run into his online chat partner in his favorite arcade? And she was pretty hot. Not at all what he'd imagined, but hot nonetheless.
Kai realized that y/n was waiting for him to say something. 'You're taller than I expected."
Without missing a beat, y/n replied, "And you've got weirder hair."
Kai smirked. He was liking y/n better by the minute.

Kai pumped his fist. "Ha! Beat you again!"
Y/n smirked at him again. "Okay, wise guy. Let's see you beat this." She grabbed Kai's arm and dragged him over to a large machine he'd never noticed before. It was clearly a two-person game, with two identical patterns of arrows on the ground and a pair of screens. Letters on top of the machine read Dance-o-Tron, whatever that was.
"And how does this thing work, exactly?" Kai asked.
Y/n put two of her tokens into the machine and stood in front of one of the screens. "See those arrows on the floor?"
Kai nodded slowly. "Yeah..."
"Well, when arrows appear on the screen, you step on the matching arrows on the floor."
"Okay," Kai said dubiously. He didn't have much confidence in this thing.
Y/n hit start and arrows started moving up the screen. Kai did his best, but he just couldn't get his feet to hit the right spots on the floor. By the time the game finally ended, he was panting and exhausted.
"What...was...that?" Kai demanded between pants.
Y/n grinned at him. "Dancing. You should try it some time."
Kai scowled as he remembered how easily she had matched her moves to the arrows on the machine. "That's...not...dancing. I...can dance...I was in...the Ninjago Talent Show..."
"Obviously not as a dancer," y/n replied with a now-familiar smirk. Kai sighed mentally. He really needed to stop giving her openings like that.

The hours flew by, and almost before Kai knew it, the arcade was closing for the night. Kai grabbed a piece of paper scribbled a note and his phone number on it while he and y/n walked out to the bus stop.
"Hey..." y/n said casually, turning to look at Kai. It took a huge effort to keep himself from getting lost in her e/c eyes.
"Yeah?" Kai asked.
"I had fun."
Kai grinned and pumped his fist. "Yeah!" he stopped as he realized y/n was still there. "Um...can we pretend you didn't see that?"
Y/n grinned back at him, a genuine smile instead of the smirk that accompanied her usual comebacks. "Sure, Hothead. But you still have weird hair."
Kai glanced over his shoulder. "Oh, man, there's my bus! Bye, y/n!" he turned and sprinted to the bus, making it just a second before the driver closed the doors. He sat down and smiled to himself as the bus pulled away. His friends would never believe that he'd met his online friend at the arcade.
Of course, he'd leave out the part about the Dance-o-Tron.
