I woke up groaning, my head pounding so hard that I could feel it in my toes. Then I fell back into the bed. It was so comfy and soft and I could feel myself slipping back into sleep...
A loud thud made me shoot up, making the headache return with a vengeance. "What?" I groaned. Then there was another thud.
I blinked open my eyes and stared at my surroundings. Where was I? Where were Lena, Aiden and Brett? Where was the other bed? In fact, why was I in a bed? This was my room, right?
The thud sounded again, making me frustratingly mad. "Okay, seriously who is that?"
That was when I turned around and gaped for what seemed like an eternity. I had been sleeping against a huge glass wall this entire time.
And on the other side was Bree.
Was this some kind of joke?
Bree held up a finger and then breathed on the glass. Then she started writing something in the fog. Of course, everything she wrote came out backward for me so I looked around for a mirror. Luckily there was a hand held one.
I grabbed it off the nightstand next to my bed and faced it against the words Bree had written on the glass.
Are you okay?
I frowned before nodding. Then I breathed on the glass and wrote:
Why would you ask that?
You don't remember anything?
Remember what?
Stop answering my questions with questions!
Bree blew a wisp of hair away from her face in frustration. I noticed there was a large bruise on her temple.
What happened to you?
They knocked me out so it was easier for them to carry me here and lock me up.
Lock you up? They? What are you talking about?
Bree looked around her, as if to make sure no one was there.
Okay, this is basically what happened. We had gone on my stupid recon mission to look for good places to place ambushes. But Hailey had caught up to us and dragged you and me away to...well whatever this place is. I think it's the Veiled camp. I don't know what happened to the others. I only hope they're not dead.
My eyes widened in horror.
DEAD?
Do you remember anything now?
I focused, trying to remember anything from the...day before? What time was it? Slowly small flashes started to come back to me, but not everything. I could remember one thing clearly; Trey's face as he yelled my name. I had just waved goodbye at him. Why would I do that?
Give it time. Hailey had controlled you for a while. She probably commanded you to forget everything. Don't worry, it'll all come back.
Hailey did what now?
I was under someone's control? The thought of it sent chills down my spine. How could someone so easily make me do something against my will and at the same time, make me feel okay with it? That wasn't right. That was so . . . unnatural.
Suddenly Bree's head snapped backward. "Someone's coming." She mouthed and then erased all of our writing that was already fading away.
Now, the glass wall wasn't your typical clear see through wall. It was kind of...foggy? I can't really explain but I can say that I couldn't see the other side of Bree's room, where the door was; only her bed and the area around it.
