In Korean, two vowel symbols "ㅏ" and "ㅗ" are called bright vowels since they sound sonorous to Korean native speakers. Since the vowel symbols such as "ㅙ", "ㅘ", "ㅐ", and "ㅒ" were derived from "ㅏ" and "ㅗ", these vowel symbols are also considered bright vowels.
On other head, "ㅓ" and "ㅜ" are considered dark vowels along with "ㅝ", "ㅞ", and "ㅖ".
Meanwhile "ㅣ" and "ㅡ" are called neutral vowels. The vowel harmony principle prohibits the combination of bright and dark vowels symbols.
• Additional information •
There are vowel symbols that cannot be combined together. For instance, "ㅗ" does bot combine with "ㅓ" or "ㅔ", whereas "ㅜ" does not combine with "ㅏ" or "ㅐ". The reason is attributed to the Korean vowel harmony principles.
