The Lover
"Spence!" She squealed, attacking the small boy from behind with a bear hug. He yelped in surprise, luckily holding balance before they could fall. The book he was reading, however, fell to the ground. He pouted at the fallen object.
"Sunny, I was reading!" he complained, slowly bending down to grab the book while still keeping her on his back.
"Yeah, yeah," she waved off. "But can you believe it? We're going to finish high school in a couple of days! Away from this hell hole!" He smiled genuinely at that. Being only young kids at high school made them easy targets to bullying, especially Spencer. But he was glad he didn't have to suffer alone, that his best friend was there to help him when he was feeling down.
"I know," he agreed happily, "I mean, next his Yale, and we'll be closer to achieving our dreams!"
"But do you know what you want to do as a career yet?" His friend finally got off his back to sit beside him for their upcoming serious talk. "I know you want to go to Yale and get some doctorates and bachelors, but like what are you going to use them for?"
"I don't know," he shrugged, stroking the book fondly absentmindedly, "create theories, update Einstein's thoughts and maybe help find a cure for schizophrenia. . ."
"That sounds good." She approved. "You're going to be awesome."
"What about you?" Slender looked to her curiously. "What do you want to do in the future?"
"Don't laugh. . ." She hesitates, looking around as if looking out for people who would hear them. "But I want to be a FBI Agent."
"WHAT?" She shushed him immediately. "B-But do you have any idea how dangerous that is? The crime scenes you see in photos - you're just going to be helping at the office, right?"
"No!" she sniffed. "I'm going out on field!"
"No!" he protested. "That's so dangerous, you could get hurt!"
"I'll be fine," she waved off, "I'm going to be a hero! I'll be saving lives, Spence, and with my genius mind I'll help solve cases quicker!" He still didn't like the idea. "I promise, when I make it as an Agent, I'll keep you up to date on my whereabouts - we can even have secret codes or something to let each other know if we are in danger!"
"Al. . .alright." he gave in reluctantly. "As long as I know you're okay, it'll be fine."
"Yes!" She grabbed him into a tight hug again. "I knew you would support me in my dreams just like how I will for you!" She pulled away to give him a genuine smile. "I just know you're going to change lives, Spence, and I'll be supporting you along the way."
"Promise?" He held his pinky finger out. She looped her own with his.
"I promise."

Years later. . .
"Excuse me," the young man rushed, pushing past the crowd, "excuse me, please! I-I need to get through!" He finally reached the front of the crowd, looking around at the scene frantically.
It was hectic; police were everywhere gathering as much evidence as possible, some were interviewing witnesses while others helped with the unfortunate victims that had passed.
As soon as he heard there was a gun battle with a gang at the bank, he tried to get there as soon as possible. He hoped it was just a small shoot out, but was startled when he saw that the bank was barely standing. A bomb had been let off.
"Excuse me!" Spencer called out to one of the policemen near him. "Excuse me! Did you see a woman around? She's Korean, in her early twenties with raven black hair to her mid back. She has brown eyes and she would have worn a white sundress with a denim jacket - she was at the bank and her name is -"
"Sunmi Park, I'm assuming?" the policeman said. . .sadly. Spencer didn't notice, and continued his rant.
"Yes! That's her! Technically it's Sunmi Reid but that doesn't matter - can you show me where she is? I need to make sure she's okay -"
"I'm sorry - Doctor Reid, is it? I'm sorry but. . ." The policeman trailed off, Spencer's expression turning to one of terror and panic. "She saved a mother and her nine month old daughter during a crossfire in the bank. She. . .she sacrificed her life to save them."
Spencer saw the world move before he could feel his body hit the ground. His dazed eyes stared up at the sky with the policeman and a paramedic at his side, trying to get his attention. But it was no use. His best friend, Sunmi Park, the love of his life, his wife, was gone. She sacrificed her life selflessly to save a mother and her child from getting harmed at the bank.
She was so close to reaching her dreams of becoming a federal agent only for her to lose her life unwillingly. She left the world, left him alone in the big world that now seems small without her.
He closed his eyes and allowed the darkness to take over his shocked mind, feeling tears slide down his face before he was fully unconscious.
