The double doors of the treatment area in the hospital bursted open as Charlie ran in, his face white with terror. He spotted Destinee laying on a gurney, the E.R. doctor looking into her eyes with a pen light. On the next gurney was laying Tyler, the van's driver with a mild head wound. Charlie rushed to his daughter.
"Desti. Are you alright?"
"She's fine, dad. Calm down", Bella answered snappy.
"I'm so sorry girls. I tried to stop."
"It's okay, Tyler."
"It sure as hell is not okay."
"Dad, it's not his fault..."
"We nearly lost Destinee", he cut her off, sternly.
"But you didn't."
Destinee looked down, sad. She knew that Bella wished that she was dead. Since they've met, she's never been nice to Destinee. Charlie, meanwhile, glared at Tyler.
"You can kiss your license goodbye."
"I heard the Chief's daughter was here", Dr Cullen said when he entered the room.
He was in his 30's and his face was kind, but pale.
"She is not his daughter", Bella muttered.
What she didn't know till then was, that Dr Cullen had super hearing. He merely raised an eyebrow at Bella's comment and saw the sadness in Destinee's face. Charlie and Bella looked up as the blond doctor approached.
"Good. Dr Cullen", Charlie greeted.
"I've got this one, Jackie", Doctor Cullen addressed the E.R. Doctor.
She handed him the chart and exited. Dr. Cullen reviewed her chart.
'Why does she do this the whole time?'
His eyes merely widened when he heard a voice in his head. Clearly he wasn't a mind reader. But that voice couldn't be overheard. He kept looking at the chart, confused on the inside. To not arise suspicions, he didn't let the confusion come to the surface. So he raised his head and saw that Destinee still had a sad look on her face. Dr Cullen felt the back of her head with his hand. He was wondering why she didn't flinch from the coldness of his skin.
"Does it hurt?"
"No", Destinee muttered and the doctor knew immediately that it was her voice he had heard inside his head.
"You have a nice knot growing back there, but your x-rays show no indication of concussion. You just have a few scratches on your knees and arms. You won't have any scars left."
"I'm so sorry, Desti. I'm really..."
Charlie abruptly pulled the curtain between Tyler and them.
"It would have been a lot worse if Edward hadn't knocked me out of the way."
"Edward? Your boy?" Charlie questioned Carlisle.
Dr. Cullen quickly looked back at the chart. Bella's intuition flickered, sensing that he knew something. She pressed.
"Well, he saved both of us. It was amazing how he got to me so fast. He was nowhere near me."
Dr. Cullen smiled at her.
"Bella, I was the one that got you out of danger."
The brunette scoffed.
"As long as you're save. And don't worry Destinee, you can still practice your sports."
Charlie, Bella and Destinee exited the treatment area to the reception.
"I just have to sign some paperwork", Charlie said, "you better call your mom."
"You told her?! She's probably freaking", Bella exclaimed.
He shrugged and hurried off. Bella shook her head and pulled out her cell phone. She was about to dial, but then looked down the hall. Doctor Cullen was talking to Rosalie and Edward. Rosalie was clearly furious at Edward who stood his ground. Dr. Cullen was playing intermediary.
"This isn't just about you, it's about all of us."
Dr. Cullen saw Bella and stopped Rosalie's rant. Just then Destinee came to Bella's side.
"Hey, ehm... Bella?"
"Go away", she hissed lowly turning to the shocked girl.
That made Rosalie very furious.
"O-okay", Destinee muttered depressed.
"Let's take this in my office", Dr Cullen said to Rosalie.
Rosalie glared at Edward and at Bella as she went off with Dr Cullen. Edward took a deep breath of air as Bella approached, determined to get her answers..
"Can I talk to you for a moment?" Bella asked.
She only received a nod as answer.
"How did you get over to me so quickly?"
"I was standing right next to both of you."
Bella ignored the empathized word.
"You were next to your car, across the lot."
He stepped closer to her. His expression turned icy cold.
"No, I wasn't."
Now Bella was the one who stepped closer to.
"Yes. You were."
"You're confused. You hit your head."
"Yeah, thanks to that brat. But I know what I saw."
"And what, exactly, was that?"
"You stopped that van. You pushed it away."
"No one will believe that."
"I wasn't planning to tell anymore."
This registered with Edward. They were inches from each other and the tension between them was thick.
"Beside the brat would."
"She's not a brat, Bella! She saved your life today", Edward said, not happy.
"Listen, I just want to know the truth."
"Can't you just thank me and get over it?"
"Thank you."
They looked at each other, angry and defensive and without a doubt, attracted.
"You're not going to let it go, are you?"
"No."
Edward turned and walked away.
"Then I hope you enjoy disappointment."
"Why did you even bother?"
He stopped and then looked back at her, unexpectedly vulnerable.
"I don't know. But I guess nobody deserves to die."
And he kept walking away."
"By the way, you should really thank your sister for saving you. She doesn't deserve the treatment you're giving her right now."
With that, he was gone around the corner.
"That brat is not my sister", Bella hissed.
But Edward too had super hearing and heard what she said. Bella didn't even think about thanking Destinee. She could only think about how to find out the truth.
