BOOK: milk and honey
AUTHOR: Rupi Kaur
GENRE: Poetry
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: This is the journey of surviving through poetry. This is the blood, sweat, and tears of twenty-one years. This is my heart in your hands. This is the hurting, the loving, the breaking, and the healing.
REVIEW: This is a book I have been really excited to read ever since I heard about it. Poetry isn't really a genre I've ever felt that comfortable in, but I had very high hopes coming into this book. The book was extremely emotional, passionate and many of the poems spoke to the feelings I've felt in the past or am currently feeling.
There were many poems I had to read multiple times to fully grasp the meaning in them or to really take on the message of the words, and it's a book I know I will be reading a lot in the future. To me, it's more a survival guide on dealing with emotions than a poetry collection.
The poems weren't fancy, or wordy which made the experience so intense because it was just about emotions. It was such a new experience to see my feelings written out so clearly, and it was comforting to know that I'm not alone in my thoughts.
The drawings also added to the poems, and in general it was a very lovely book to read. However, in a collection this big of course there were poems I didn't like. Some of the 'poems' do just feel like cliché lines that have been broken up to make something resembling a poem, and don't have a great degree of meaning. I didn't really enjoy any of the poems in the 'loving' section. But as a whole, I enjoyed this collection of poems thoroughly.
FINAL VERDICT: This is the kind of book I want to read when I wake up, and be the last thing I read before I go to sleep. I will be reading this many times in the near future.
