BOOK: To Kill A Mockingbird

AUTHOR: Harper Lee

GENRE: Classic

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: 'To Kill A Mockingbird' takes place in Alabama during the Depression and it is narrated by a little girl named Jean Louise, also known as Scout. It follows three years in her life and her father's punctuated by the arrest and trial of a black man accused of raping a white woman.

REVIEW: So I read this book for the first time ever recently which I know is a disgrace seeing as it's probably regarded as one of the best novels of all time, and I've only read it just now! I'll say now that it wasn't exactly what I was expecting, and there were definitely elements and themes that I was not expecting to see.

If I'm being honest, I didn't find this as amazing as some people have said it is. Of course, I could see the talent of Harper Lee, and the plot moved me in more ways than one, but I didn't gain a connection with the book that struck me. Maybe it's because American culture is so separate from my own, and it isn't a direct look back at my past. The slow country life in the town where it's set isn't something that I can relate to, however I found enjoyment about reading about affairs in the town and the people in it.

It was a clear look back at the past, and I was intrigued by the way of life in the town . The narration of Scout works well in many of the scenes, and you feel yourself drawn into her child-like curiosity about things.

FINAL VERDICT: I feel better for reading it, knowing that I've finally read a book which I know has been so influential to so many people. It was an enjoyable read, one I probably have to read again to truly appreciate.
