Renjun's POV
I was at SM when I noticed Ningning laughing with someone. I heard a guy's voice and I curiously looked further inside the room to see who it was. They had their backs towards me, but I immediately recognised the boy.
Zhong Chenle. What was he doing with my crush?
I carefully listened to their conversation. It didn't sound like he was just talking, it was almost like... flirting? He would tell her cheesy jokes making her laugh and smile.
How annoying...
What happened next made my blood boil.
"Ningning-ah, you're so cute." Chenle grinned as he ruffled her hair and put his arm around her shoulders.
Even if he just did it playfully, it still made me angry at the sudden skinship. How could he do that when he knows I like her?
After seeing how much fun she was having, my heart sank. If she likes Chenle, I'll never have a chance.
I sighed. Why am I so pathetic? I should have just confessed sooner, but now Chenle's probably going to beat me to it.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialled Lucy's number. "Yoboseyo?" As soon as I heard her voice, I let out another sigh. "Lucy I've messed up." I said depressed.
"Renjun? Yah, I'm sure you're just exaggerating. What's the problem?" She asked curiously. "I waited too long and now Chenle is close with Ningning. They already look like a couple, it makes me sick..." I complained.
"Relax, they're just same-aged friends, no need to be worried." She reassured me. I shook my head even though she couldn't see me. "It doesn't look like they're just friends." I mumbled.
"Trust me, Chenle wouldn't do that to you." She insisted. "I don't know..." I said unsure.
"Well why don't you confess your feelings first before Chenle?" She encouraged me. I sighed, "You know I'm too shy for that. I won't be able to do it."
"Have some more confidence! I'll help you do it, just don't give up yet." Lucy said.
"Okay, I'll meet you later." I said quietly. "Alright, see you then. And stop sighing Renjun!" She exclaimed before ending the call.
Lucy's POV
As soon as I finished talking to Renjun, I immediately called Chenle. "Yah your plan isn't working." I told the boy.
"Huh? Why?" He asked confused. "Renjun saw you both having fun together and he's starting to give up." I explained.
"Oh... yeah you're right, this isn't working." He said with an awkward laugh. "Yah! This is serious. What are we going to do?" I asked concerned.
"Just convince him to confess. I already know that Ningning likes him back." Chenle said. "She does? Aww that's so cute!" I smiled, temporarily forgetting about the situation.
"Noona now is not the time." He reminded me. "Right. Well I'm meeting him soon so I'll try then. In the meantime, don't get too close with Ningning, it's too upsetting to see Renjun this sad." I warned him.
"Ok noona, good luck!" He exclaimed happily before hanging up. Aigoo this kid is just too cute sometimes...
About an hour later, I met Renjun in a cafe near SM. He was sat by himself in the corner so I decided to give him a little jump scare but he had no reaction. "Wow you really are sad. Usually you'd shout at me for doing that..." I muttered.
He just nodded. I sat down opposite him before speaking, "So shall we practise your confession?" I asked.
"What do you mean?" He asked confused. "Well you said you get too nervous in front of Ningning but maybe if you have your speech prepared, it might be easier for you." I explained.
"I guess we can try it. So I just pretend that you're Ningning?" He asked. I nodded, "Yeah just tell me what you want to tell Ningning."
"Ok here I go... I know we only met recently but I just wanted to tell you that I think you're really cute and funny. Umm..." He began to trail off nervously.
"Keep going!" I whispered to him.
"And I know this is sudden but... I think I like you. And I really hope that you feel the same way." He managed to say after a lot of hesitation.
I smiled and gave him a thumbs up, "That was perfect!" I told him.
"Really? That wasn't as hard as I-" Renjun suddenly stopped talking as his eyes were focused on something else.
I turned to see what he was looking at. "Ningning..." I whispered.
She looked back at us surprised, "Err sorry for interrupting you both. I'll be going now." She mumbled embarrassed, afraid that she had just eavesdropped into something personal.
Renjun and I looked at each other in panic. Oh no... did she think that Renjun was confessing to me?
"Wait Ningning! It's not what you think!" He quickly stood up and ran after her.
I just stared after them both as they left the cafe. Me and Renjun? I shuddered at the thought, that would just be too weird.
How could a crush get so complicated?
Renjun thinks Ningning likes Chenle.
Ningning thinks Renjun likes Lucy.
But really, they like each other...
