Evra was so excited to set off these fireworks it was adorable! He was like a little kid waiting for a surprise! It was the 4th of July and he was counting down the hours til it got dark. "Just calm down Evra. It'll be dark soon and we can set all of these off." I told him. "Will we have time? We have a show tonight you know!" He said. I nodded and touched his shoulder "Yes my reptilian friend, we will have time!" I said with a giggle. He nodded and hopped into his hammock with one of my books. He started to read Paper Towns by John Green and I smiled and climbed in with him. "Is this a good one?" He asked and I nodded. "A very good one. You'll love it." I told him. That kept him occupied until it got dark. It was now 10 pm, so Evra and I grabbed the bags of fireworks and headed to the field we'd been in yesterday and started opening up the boxes and boxes of big fireworks. "Did you bring headphones, Evra?" He shook his head. "I want to hear them, I don't care if my ears hurt!" He told me. I laughed and kissed his cheek before opening the last box with my sharp nails and putting the trash in the bags we'd brought them in. One summer when I was 13 I got to see how the people who did the shows set off the fireworks, and luckily I remember how it went so I set them up that way and quickly lit all of them for a big show. Evra and I stood back and watched as they shot into the sky and exploded into bright lights and neon colors. I smiled as Evra's face lit up and I loved seeing my best friend that happy! He had the biggest smile on his face and was totally focused on the explosions in the sky and it made me want to explode with happiness just like the fireworks. I quickly lit the second set as the first were dying out and went back to Evra's side to watch them. I wrapped my arms around Evra, put my head on his shoulder, and smiled as he wrapped his arm around my shoulder and lay his head on mine. After the third set was over we were out of fireworks, so we picked up the empty cases and started to head home hand in hand.
It started raining on the way back and by the time we got to our tent, we were both soaked through to our skin! I went behind the curtain and stole one of Evra's shirts and some shorts and changed. I came out and found Evra in just his black sweatpants, searching for something. He looked at me and the shirt I was wearing and shook his head. "I was gonna wear that." He said, unable to hold back his smile. I walked to him and wrapped my arms around his waist, "Aw. I sowwy." I said, giving him a playful pout. He laughed and kissed my nose and I smiled at him. When I let go, I saw the pink places on his left shoulder where his scales hadn't grown back after that night in the sewers. Evra caught me looking and gently moved my attention back to him. "I'm so sorry Evra." I said, tearing up. He wiped away the tears that fell and pulled me in close. He was so warm. "Don't be sorry. You didn't do this." He said softly. I sniffed and tried not to become a sobbing mess in his shoulder as he held me and tried to make me feel better. "It's because of me though that it happened!" I cried. Evra rubbed my back and placed his hand on the back of my head gently. "I don't blame you for this. Not at all. We were both there and we both knew what might happen." He said. "I'm glad it was me and not you Liv." He whispered in my ear. I looked up at him and for the first time I really noticed how green his eyes were and how beautiful his scales were. How much I really truly loved this amazing snake boy in front of me. Staring into his eyes I felt something I'd never felt before with Evra and to be honest it scared me a little bit. I snapped out of that thought when Evra pushed my wet hair away from my face and started to lean in closer.
