By Padmesh Gupta Power Sector was once considered amongst the shining star of investments and where most Private Equity Funds and Banks were running pan India in order to have a sizeable chunk of the share in their respective investment kitty. The reason behind their run was the forecast of huge potential investments in the sector by the planning commission. Further for every power plant to run, it requires fuel, manpower, and PPA. For fuel the government was giving coal linkages or allotting coal blocks. Power is not a commodity, which can be produced stored and kept and requires immediate consumption, which again was depended upon government PPA's & power exchanges. The debacle in the sector started when the government decided to stop signing the PPA's which lead to a larger slice of power producers shifting their ideal power capacity to power exchanges, which further crushed the sector as the exchange rates had gone so down due to sudden increase in supplies that power producers couldn't even recover the fuel cost post production. The sector later suffered another jolt after the blocks were cancelled on top of it the other option of purchasing coal through nationalized sources didn't had enough resources to feed the abrupt requirement in the sector. Now, as of today more than 104 Gigawatt of power plant capacity stands idle. An infrastructure where 80% public money borrowed through banks and other institutions are stuck and plants are degrading. Even the 20% so invested by the promoters are finding no ways to return to them. Moreover due to this idle capacity economy is losing the opportunity to produce more and more jobs directly/indirectly. Also small entrepreneurs mostly linked as vendors/transporters/contractors etc. would lose more opportunities through requirement generated in the sector.
