Carmen Willis had perfected the art of hiding bruises and blood over carefully placed clothing. Subjected to her parents' cruelty and non-stop battles with addiction and the law, Carmen's life consists of holding her family together and caring for her two younger sisters. There isn't much good in her life, with the constant threat of the encroaching darkness she struggles to hold off. The only light that she ever has in her life comes in the form of her friends and, more importantly, her (not) boyfriend Nick.
Nick Reeves has lived in Acorn hill for as long as he can remember, and as long as he's lived there, Carmen's been there with him. Having moved across town in the wake of a death that left his entire family struggling, Nick doesn't know how to feel about anything, except of course, Carmen. Shadows of his family's tragic past following him wherever he goes, Nick saw pieces of his pain in Carmen, making him want to know her even more.
Determined to see the real Carmen, rather than the mask she wears, Nick makes a point of being with Carmen whenever he can, trying to give her the light she deserves.
Just when Carmen is beginning to open up, and Nick is beginning to trust that everything will work out, the unimaginable happens and Carmen's life is capsized. In the wake of yet another tragedy, Carmen must deal with the aftermath all on her own, pushing Nick and everyone away in the process.
The darkness begins to swallow her up, and, after a while, Carmen begins to wonder? "Why bother fighting? Why not just let it take me?"
