You were running.
Each breath you took made your lungs burn.
You kept running.
You kept running because you knew that if you stopped now if you give up now, you will die out here.
You clutched your bible in your hands and continued to run.
You weren't exactly religious, per se, but it was the last thing your mother gave to you before everything turned to shit. So yes, this bible means a lot to you and you will not go anywhere without it. You will clutch it until your life leaves your body.
But hopefully, that won't happen tonight.
The rustling of leaves and steps from behind you gave you the incentive to run faster. Travelling on country roads alone was the worst idea but it was at least safer than taking the main roads. You didn't want to imagine what would happen if wanderers found a little female trotting alone along the roads like a damsel in distress. At best, they'll offer help but in this world, it's always the worst.
Your vision was starting to get hazy and your breathing was becoming more laboured. The bible in your arms felt like it was growing heavier and heavier with each step you take.
"Please..." Your voice was barely a rasp. You stumbled as you fell to your knees.
Your knees didn't hit the ground, but hard stone. You squinted through your tears and saw stairs towards a huge, dark castle. It was too dark to see anything else and even the moon was hiding behind the clouds. You swallowed and decided whatever is in that castle would be better than being out here and being torn apart by wolves.
Gathering the little strength left in you, you pushed open the huge oak doors and dashed inside, collapsing on the soft, mushy carpet. You heard the bible fall somewhere beside you but you didn't even have the strength to check where.
From the corner of your eye, you saw a white bundle of white dash with inhumane speed followed by a few howls and growls. You rolled over onto your back and through your hazy vision, you noticed a creature with snowy white fur and red eyes looming over you.
"You seem to have ignored the two very obvious warning signs that humans are not welcome here, brat." The wolf creature just...talked?
You couldn't decide if you were crazy or delirious, but the wolf creature just talked. And you understood. Maybe one of the wolves bit you after all and now you can somehow understand the wolf?
You tried to open your mouth to speak but no words came out.
"You are either incredibly stupid, or an ignorant little shit who doesn't know what's good for her-" His gaze flickered to where you guessed your bible landed and hissed. "-you're a follower of God?"
You didn't move.
"And you dare set foot into my castle?" Mist surrounded the wolf for a split second before it cleared to reveal and black-haired man.
You blinked.
Did that really just happen?
"I'm not..." You tried but was interrupted with a fit of coughs. The male stood there and watched you curl into a ball on his carpet.
"It...it was my mother's." The words barely left your mouth before you were attacked by another set of coughs.
The male looked you up and down, taking in your ragged clothes, messed up hair, the dirt under your nails and over your hands and sighed. He disappeared for a moment- like literally one second he was there and gone the next- then returned with a wine glass filled with water. He knelt beside you and placed the wine glass on the carpet.
