Tanith was originally planned to die in book one when the white cleaver shot her but Derek's editer persuaded him that it was a bad idea.
This is mentioned in the dying of the light when she fights the black cleaver again.
Because Derek had planned to kill Tanith off in book 1, he had no long lasting plans for her, so he put her threw lots of torture and stuff in the other books including:
-getting stung by the Grotesquery and having a seizure
-getting stabbed through the hand
-getting nailed to a chair
-the whole remnant thing
