CHAPTER 10: YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.

 

Rin's POV

I stare blankly at the wall.

I remember now.

How did I forget before? How could I forget?

I know why Dad isn't here, why Jimmy didn't pick me up.

They're dead.

It was that plane accident. I'd had nightmares for days, imagining that I was on that plane, only able to watch as they fell to their deaths.

After a while, I couldn't handle it anymore, and I...

I slowly raise my hand to my head, feeling the space above my ear.

I push past my hair and rub a bullet scar.

I'm supposed to be dead.

I shot myself.

This is impossible.

I'm dimly aware of Hokage patiently standing in front of me, watching me.

"What do you want?" As I utter these words, my voice sounds devoid of emotion. Dead. I wish I was.

"What's wrong, Rin?" he asks.

I pause for a second, and close my eyes. "I don't think my dad's ever going to come pick me up. He's not going to come for me. He can't. He's gone."

My eyes start burning. I rub at them and stand up.

"I'm really tired right now, so I'm going to go--"

I stiffen in surprise as Hokage envelopes me in a bear hug. "I'm terribly sorry, Rin."

As if on cue, a flood of emotions within me break down all my walls, and I cry.

I splash my face with icy water and stare at myself in the mirror. My eyes are still pretty red and puffy. Before, I would have laughed at myself. I look hideous. 

But I can't laugh.

I walk back to the classroom, concentrating on everything but thinking about Dad. One step, two steps.

"Hey, Rin!" I look up at the sound of Naruto's voice. He pats the seat next to him. "Sit with me!"

I force a smile on my face and sit down.

Naruto continually chatters about how glad he is that we passed. Thankfully, he doesn't notice how I wince as he speaks. His voice is so loud.

I lay my head and use my arms as a pillow. I close my eyes.

"Naruto, move! I want to sit where you're sitting!" yells Sakura.
