CHAPTER 3: WHAT'S WITH THE PE CLASS HERE!?

Rin's POV

I look back at the schedule. I've had some really weird classes. I don't think the Hokage was kidding when he said this was a Ninja Academy. I've had lessons on things like ninjutsu, which is like making hand seals and chakra, and genjutsu, seeing through illusions. After lunch would be... taijutsu?

I think of all the movies I've watched about ninjas, like Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. But I don't think they're technically ninjas. They just know karate and whatever.

I sigh and stuff the paper into my pocket. I boredly munch on a riceball the Hokage gave to me, swinging my legs. Akira got detention for arguing with the teacher-- and throwing a few things--, so Aoi stayed with her. Iruka shooed me away, saying that he had to call their parents. So here I was, alone, eating lunch, alone.

With nothing else to do during lunch-time, I mull over everything that happened so far, and why everything was going so weirdly. Well, Dad leaving me in forests was weird enough. But him leaving me with nothing was weirder than weird.

Usually, Jimmy's also here to help me out a little, whether he's hiding or actually with me. And there's always a survival bag with a cell-phone, even if there's no reception in the area.

I sigh and toss the rest of the onigiri into the trash can, having lost my appetite.

Then, I notice that I'm alone-- not just alone during lunch, but completely alone outside. When did everyone go in!?

I dash along the edge of the building, only to run into someone hard.

I painfully pick myself up from the dirt. "Ouch," I mutter, staring at a scratch on my arm. My elbows and my legs also sting pretty bad.

"What a drag," the boy drawls. He sits up, looking down at his clothes, which are quite soiled, too.

"Sorry," I quickly say, looking at his face. Then it clicks. "Hey, you were that guy I sat next to!"

I stick out my hand to help him up, but he ignores it.

"As a man, I should be the one helping you out, not the other way around," he mutters.

He stands up by himself, wiping his hands, and starts walking away before he pauses and looks at me. I tilt my head, confused.

"You do know it's time for the next class, right?" He drones. "By the way, I'm Shikamaru." He holds out a hand to help me up the hill.

"Rin," I reply. I reach out-- and push his hand away. "And even if I'm a girl, I've got my pride too."

I walk until I'm standing next to him. I grin when I realize that we're almost the same height. "But nice to meet you, Shikamaru."

He continues standing there, his mouth hanging open.

"A bee's gonna fly into your mouth, and it's not going to be pretty," I tease him, poking his cheek.

He immediately shuts his mouth and frowns at me. Shikamaru grumbles, "Troublesome woman" before quickly striding past me.

I laugh silently in my head until I realize-- "WAIT, WHAT DID YOU JUST CALL ME!?"

. . . . . . . . . . . .

"Such a violent woman..." Shikamaru mutters under his breath.

I smack his arm, which is already bruised by the past multiple hits. He never learns, does he. He winces and walks faster, but I widen my steps to match his pace.

"Don't even think about insulting me! I'll beat you up!"

"What a drag..."

He folds his arms behind his head and stares at the sky while walking. I tilt my head up, wondering what exactly he's looking for.

"The clouds," says Shikamaru.

I look at him. "What'd you say?"

He slowly repeats, "I was looking at the clouds."

I walk more slowly, trailing behind him. Did he just read my  mind?

"No, it's just obvious what you're thinking."

After hitting his shoulder again, I ignore Shikamaru and glance back up at the clouds, I watch the puffs of whiteness sluggardly pushing their way through the blue expanse of sky.

"Why look at the clouds?" I ask, wrinkling my nose. It's so boring. There's no action!

"Exactly," he says with a sigh. I look over at him again. His eyes are trained on one cloud, following its painfully slow movement. After a while, Shikamaru says, "They're peaceful. They go wherever they want, whenever they want--

"We're here," he abruptly interrupts himself.

Iruka-sensei looks over at us with a frown. "Where have you two been? We've already begun the matches! And Shikamaru, you missed yours!" he scolds.

Shikamaru just shrugs half-heartedly. "Maybe next time, then." He saunters over to a tree, plopping himself down immediately into a comfortable position.

Iruka-sensei clears his throat. "Well," he says, looking down at his wooden clipboard, "Rin Suzuki verses Sakura Haruno!"

I stares at him, nose wrinkled. "What kind of match is this?"

"You two are sparring. Make the symbol of combat!" Iruka-sensei yells.

I cross my arms, watching the pink-haired girl, Sakura, walk up to the center of the circle.

Did she dye her hair? From what I know, that kind of pink is not natural.

She then smiles at me, making a strange hand-sign. "Let's do our best, Rin-chan!"

I tilt my head, utterly confused. "Is this a new way of flipping people off or somethi--"

Sakura punches me in the face, and knocks me into stunned silence.

I frown as I rub my cheek.

"Ouch, that's going to hurt," I mutter quietly, glaring at the glistening blood on my fingers.

Sakura bites her lip. "Are you o--"

I growl at her, all logic and moral kindness tossed behind me. "I meant how you'll feel when I'm finished with you!"

I drop to the ground and swing my leg backwards, catching her ankles. She trips immediately with a surprised squeak. I jump onto her, securing her wrists with one of my hands and holding her underneath me with my knees.

"Why the hell did you just punch me!?" I demand, holding my own fist above her face.

"W-we're having a match! We're supposed to fight!" Sakura begins crying. "Iruka-sensei! I'm done! I surrender!"

Iruka-sensei gawks at me, and I know my face darkens as I scowl at him, giving him a death glare. "What kind of teacher lets kids fight!? You know what? I'm done with this! I'm leaving!"

I storm away. "What's with this PE class!?"

I catch some mumbled conversations among the people near me. "What's with her?" "She's really fast!" "I thought she didn't know anything about being a ninja!" "Is it really her first time at an Academy?"

I scoff.

I'm seriously going to have a talk with Hokage.
