"C'mon."
Isen pulled me along as I scanned the crowd. Amongst them, Arlo stood out, crossing his arms with a cold stare plastered on his face.
Isen helped me up the stairs to the main hall. He supported me with ease as we walked and abruptly turned to a door that read Infirmary.
"Hey doc, I need-"
An unkempt man with navy hair and dark eyes glared at Isen exasperatedly. My eyes flashed to his name tag, reading Darren in a solid black font.
"Great, a peanut gallery. Look, kid, if this about you and Blyke getting injured over a stupid pen again I swear i'm gonna-"
"No! I'm here for her!"
Doc looked down at me with a shocked, yet concerned expression on his face. The blood from my nose trickled onto my hand, splatting on the clean floor.
"Come with me." He said in a hushed, urgent tone.
The beds were full. Full of the mid tiers I heavily injured. They were all barely conscious with bandages wrapped on various appendages. I saw an injured John and Seraphina at one of the beds, their eyes locked on me with a concerning expression as Isen led me around the other side of the curtain.
Isen set me down on an isolated bed, his arm still protectively wrapped around me.
"Isen, get lost. You-" the Doc pointed at me "-don't lay down yet."
Isen's lips parted in protest, but the terrifying glint in Doc's eye made him shut his mouth otherwise. I glanced at him apologetically before he left.
"Here, drink this." Doctor Darren handed me a clear cup of light green liquid. "It'll help with the nosebleed."
A bittersweet taste resided in my mouth. I puckered my lips. But, just as promised, a comfortingly cool sensation enveloped my sinuses, instantly stopping the trickling blood.
"Four underclass mid-tiers came in essentially in near critical condition fifteen minutes ago. I assume this was your doing?" He asked in low voice.
"Yes." I said as I took a white hand towel and wiped off the congealed blood from my nostrils.
"Not even a full forty-eight hours on campus and you get targeted." Doc sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "And not only that, the new student fills my infirmary to the brim on her second day at school."
"I didn't have a choice." I retorted.
"I'm not saying it you did the wrong thing, Delta. I'm saying that as the third strongest student in this school, you need to be able to keep a good reputation from here on out. And confrontation like this isn't going to help you boost it." He advised.
I felt chagrin in boil in my veins.
"It feels like since i've stepped on campus, all people care about is how powerful others are. And the people who are helpless are ridiculed and beaten for something they can't control! Imagine if I would've been a cripple, doc. The first person I interacted with would have beaten me to a pulp sooner than those mid-tiers could've."
I curled my hands into fists and rested it on my thighs. Those underclassmen attacked me because I left with John during sixth. John, a cripple. Who the hell cares? He got out of a rut that I didn't want to be in. That by itself made me glad I crossed him. I....want to be friends with him.
"That's the way things are here at Wellston. As a potential royal candidate, these attacks have to be kept to a minimum or have to be handled responsibly-especially when you use your power." He looked down at me.
Right. The Royal Hierarchy Headmaster Vaughn tried convincing me to join. Screw that!
"Screw the stupid hierarchy! I don't need to have a pretentious title to get a good rep, Doc." I replied bitingly.
Doctor Darren sighed.
"You'll learn soon enough." He glanced at the clock. "Stay here for an hour."
"Why?" I asked as I stood up.
"The medicine will clear out of your blood stream in that time. I need to draw some blood to see what causing your symptoms. Fatigue and nose bleeds aren't normal things to get when you use your abilities."
"I can't do that! I have to do homework."
"Then i'll excuse you for tomorrow. Stay here in the meantime." He snapped exasperatingly.
"Fine."
I reluctantly plopped down on the bed, mulling over my eventful day before falling into a blissful nap.
:;
"You should have your results back in a week. If any of the symptoms are too overwhelming, stop by so I could formulate a tonic."
"Thanks Doc."
I watched as he pressed a cotton ball against the bend in my arm and sealed it with tape. A sudden knock averted our attention to the door.
I closed my eyes and leaned my head against the headboard. Hushed voices were exchanged across from me, followed by a light scuffle of footsteps.
"Delta."
That familiar, arrogant aura intruded my space. My eyes snapped open, only to reveal....
....Arlo?! :;
