This is probs gonna be a bit angsty at the start. But it ends well dw!!

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there lived a dragon. She was strong and wise and magnificent, a ruler among her kind. All bowed before her, all trembled before her might. Yet she did not do what so many other dragons did. She did not go on rampages, burning villages and eating livestock. She did not have epic duels with rivals of her kind. She was content to stay in her mountainous cave, sitting on her hoard in contemplative silence.

In that same land, there once was a princess. This princess, to the anger and irritation of her tutors, did not sit still in the castle to read poetry and learn to embroider. Instead she wandered through the forests and fields looking for unicorns, and devoured countless books about all kinds of monsters.

When she heard about the dragon in her mountain, the princess immediately wanted to meet her. Of course, no one would let her. A child, venturing into the lair of one of the most powerful monsters in the land? The very idea was preposterous! Better to keep her safe in the palace.

Over the years, the princess got inundated with all her work, preparing her for her rule as queen. Yet she never stopped dreaming of the dragon in the mountain. So one night, on her sixteenth birthday, she set out with a backpack full of food and a knife she stole from the kitchen, towards the dragon's mountain.

The country was well-managed and there was peace in the realm, and so the journey was calm. It took two days of walking but the princess reached the cavernous mouth of the dragon's lair.

The dragon was quite surprised to find someone had dared enter her domain. Surprised and intrigued. She questioned the princess much, on the reasons why she was here and not afraid, on what had transpired in the outside world since last she went there and eventually on the personality of her guest herself. In return, the princess asked the dragon's ears off, asking about the nature of dragons, the things that had happened in the dragon's long life, what she did throughout the day. At the end of a two day long stay, the princess left, her heart full of happiness and with the express invitation to come back again.

The people at the palace had been in panic. Squads of knights had been sent out to find her. After having reassured her parents she was quite allright however, they reluctantly gave her permission to go see the dragon again.

Over the years she regularly visited the dragon, and over time, a friendship bloomed. In fact, to the princess, it felt like something more than friendship. She cherished every moment she spent with her, and longed to be with her again each time your visits were over. Ultimately, she wanted to spend her life with the dragon.

Sometimes she thought the dragon felt the same. Staring when she thought the princess wasn't looking, a glimpse of affection when she watched the princess talk, the insistent way in which she always suggested to accompany the princess back to the castle, to protect her. But at other times, the dragon was distant. She pulled away at any moment when things seemed to be heading too far into a romantic direction. As if she did not want to let the princess close. And so nothing came of the princess' feelings.

Of course, her parents couldn't have her pining after some monster in a mountain in the wilderness. She needed a proper, human lover, to take their place at her side when she'd become queen. Many suitors came, bearing gifts and tales of their valour, but not one of them captured the princess' interest. One of the suitors, desperate to prove his courage and strength but not knowing much about the princess, decided that he would slay the fearsome dragon that was rumoured to live in the mountain.

With the aid of an enchanted sword and armour blessed by the gods, he set out on his quest. The battle was long and bloody, but eventually the dragon prevailed and killed him. It came at a great cost though. She was mortally wounded in the fight and succumbed to her wounds soon after her last victory.
