You know what's the best MGE ship? Yeti x Selkie. Yetis love to give hugs and Selkies love to get hugged! It's a match made in heaven!!
The Cold northern winds blew over the frozen shore you were walking on, and you pulled on your fur jacket a little tighter. Your companion swam a distance away in the frozen sea, moving much more rapidly than you and as a consequence occasionally having to wait for you to catch up. Honestly you had no idea how she was not frozen into an icicle out there by now, but it was probably some weird monster magic.
You had met the selkie, Gunnvod, a couple weeks earlier. Some big fishing company had got the bright idea to start hunting whales in the northern seas, even though they knew the place was full of sea serpents and kraken. Predictably the ship had not made it back to port on time. So they hired you, an expendable small adventurer to trek along the coast to see if there were any traces of the ship and its crew. Honestly you wouldn't be surprised if they didn't care and had just hired you to say they had followed the law and sent a rescue operation.
You needed the money and you'd always wanted to go see the far north, so you said yes. Of course, you'd need a guide, and no one knew the northern shores better than the selkies who lived there. Selkies didn't care much for material things, but you'd managed to persuade Gunnvod into being your guide by promising some tasty fish from the warm, southern seas and she'd said yes. You had to admit you giggled a bit at the way her eyes had lit up at the thought of new fish.
If you were completely honest, she wasn't the best company. Selkie had a reputation for being stoic and asocial, but you'd thought that was a stereotype. Not so it turned out. Gunnvod had barely said anything throughout your journey. She generally stayed in the water, away from the shore, and when you pitched camp at night she still remained there. The only times she'd spoken was to say something about certain terrain coming up, or dangers, or similar things. Even then she'd often just shouted it. The few times you two were in normal speaking range you'd attempted to crack a few jokes or make small talk, but had always been met with stern silence.
Truth be told, it was beginning to weigh on you a bit. You hadn't spoken to another human being in a while now, and here in the vast wastes and with the night settling in so early the loneliness was very oppressive. You were starting to accidentally talk with the fish you cooked for dinner...
Speaking of fish, you were also thoroughly tired of always eating fish already. Next time you'd accept a job, you'd make sure it was in some valley full of farms or something.
You had resigned yourself to this being how the rest of the journey would continue. One night however, there was a fierce storm. You had made sure to bring a sturdy tent, so you weren't terribly worried about it flying away. It was mostly inconvenient to fall asleep with the noise of the wind and waves outside. You figured Gunnvod would be fine. She was a selkie, she knew the sea and would probably knew where to best take shelter.
Turns out you were wrong.
By morning the storm had died down, and after getting ready you went outside. You were about to start packing in the tent when you noticed a huddled form on the beach. Your first instinct was to think it was some kind of polar predator, but the shape looked more humanoid and wasn't moving. When you walked a bit closer you could see from the mess of golden hair that it was Gunnvod. Something was clearly wrong though. For one she wasn't in her seal skin. She also wasn't moving. At all.
Quickly you hurried over. Gunnvod was in quite a bad shape. There were a number of small cuts and bruises over her body, and her skin felt very cold. Moreover she was beginning to become pale and shivver quite a lot. However her eyes remained transfixed in shock at the object before her. That object was her seal skin, only torn in half.
