A candle is a self-contained magickal system and it can represent all the basic elements: Earth is the unburned wax, Air is the smoke, Fire the flame, and Water is the melting wax.
For most spells, however, you should have one or two altar candles in white, cream, or natural beeswax. A single central candle can be good for times of quiet meditation. For more focused rituals, you may want to light one candle for the Goddess and one for the God (I prefer the Goddess candle to be on the left and the God candle to be on the right).
The act of blowing out is in itself a magickal release of power. Rather than holding the light in a snuffer, you can send it to all those who need it. This is the perfect way to release and direct power at the end of a rite.
Some think that you should never use a candle that has been lit for another ritual or purpose, and that they should not be used for illumination. Since candles can be so expensive and you will only be using them for positive energy, there is no reason why candles should not be used for everyday use. Candles used for banishing magick, however, should be left to burn down and any remaining wax buried or disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
