Peter and Gwen cuddled on the couch together, listening to Brandy (You're A Fine Girl). She laid her head on his chest, while he stroked her hair. Their peace was interrupted when Ego joined them.

"You alright, son? Gwen?" he asked. Both of them sat up as Ego continued. "I saw your friend stomp off earlier in quite a huff"

"Yeah" Peter said

"It's fortuitous, you listening to this song"

"You know Brandy?"

"By Looking Glass? A favourite of your mom's. One of Earth's greatest compositions. Perhaps it's very greatest"

"Yes" Peter agreed.

"You know Peter, you and I are the sailor in that song. He came on a summer's day, bringing gifts from far away. Like the child I put in your mother, or the one you put in Gwen. Brandy, you're a fine girl, what a good wife you would be. My love, my life, my lady is the sea. The sea calls the sailor back. He loves the girl, but that's not his place. The sea calls upon him as history calls upon great men, and sometimes we are deprived the pleasures of mortals"

"You may not be mortal but me---"

"Peter, death will remain a stranger to both of us. As long as the light burns within the planet"

"I'm immortal?"

"Wait, so that means our child will be immortal?" Gwen asked. Ego looked at her and nodded. "Really?"

"Yes. As long as the light exists" Ego said

"So I could use the light to build things, like how you made this whole planet?" Peter asked

"Well it might take you a few million years of practice before you get really good at it"

"Get ready for a six hundred foot statue of Pac-Man with Skeletor and Heather Locklear"

"You can do whatever you want"

"I'm gonna make some weird shit"

"You know Peter, it is a tremendous responsibility. Only we can remake the universe. Only we take the bridle of the cosmos and lead it to where it needs to go"

"And how exactly are you two going to do that?" Gwen asked. Ego lit a blue flame in his hands and Peter did the same thing. "I still don't get it"

"Both of you, come with me". Peter and Gwen went with Ego.

"Now, you need to readjust the way you process life. Everything around us is temporary. We are forever" Ego said

"Doesn't eternity get boring?" Peter asked

"Not if you have a purpose Peter which is why you're here. I told you how all those years ago, I had an unceasing impulse to find life, but what I did not tell you was how I did not find it. It was all so disappointing" Ego said. Gwen didn't like where the conversation was going. She was becoming concerned. "And that is when I came to a profound realization. My innate desire to seek out other life, was not so I could walk among that life. Peter, I have found meaning" He touched Peter's forehead.

"I see it. Eternity" Peter said.

"I call it the expansion. It is my purpose, and now it is yours as well"

"It's beautiful" Peter said. Forget concerned, Gwen was becoming frightened. Especially with the images the Ego was showing them.

"For thousands of years, I have implanted thousands of extensions of myself on thousands of worlds. I need to fulfill life's one true purpose. Grow and spread, covering all that exists until everything is me. I only had one problem. A single celestial doesn't have enough power for such an enterprise. Two celestials, now that just might do" Peter looked towards Ego. That's when Gwen noticed Peter's eyes. They weren't normal. Ego had him in some kind of trance.

"Peter, snap out of it. Don't listen to him" Gwen said. He didn't seem to hear her.

"Out of all my labours, the most beguiling was attempting to graft my DNA with that of another species. I hoped the result of such a coupling would be enough to power the expansion. I had Yondu deliver some of them to me. That broke the Ravager code but I compensated him generously, and to ease his conscious, I said I'd never hurt them. That was true, they never felt a thing, but one after the other, they failed me. Not one of them carried the celestial genes until you Peter. Out of all my spawn, only you carried the connection to the light. For the first time in my existence, I am truly not alone" Ego said. Peter looked down. "What is it, son?"

"My friends" Peter said. He looked at Gwen for the first time since he was put under the trance. "Gwen, and my child"

"Well, you see, that's the mortal in you Peter. We are beyond such things"

"Yes, but my mother. You said you loved my mother"

"And that I did. My River Lily who knew all the words to all the songs that came over the radio. I returned to Earth to see her three times, and I knew if I returned a fourth, I'd never leave. The expansion, the very reason for my own existence would be over so I did what I had to do, but it broke my heart to put that tumor in her head" Ego said. That seemed to break Peter out of his trance.

"What?" he said

"I know that sounds bad but---" Peter grabbed his guns and started firing at Ego. It didn't seem to harm him, but parts of him were melted off.

"Okay Peter! That's enough!" Gwen screamed. Peter ceased his firing and lowered his guns.

"Who in the hell do you think you are!?" Ego said

"You killed my mother!"

"I tried so hard to find the form that best suited you" Ego said as he transformed into David Hasselhoff. "And this is the thanks I get? You really need to grown up" Ego changed into himself again.

"I think it's you who needs to grow up!" Gwen said, stepping in between Peter and Ego. "I had a bad feeling about you, the moment you first touched my arm. I learned to trust you, only because you're Peter's father. I can see now that was a huge mistake. I suggest you end this, let Peter and I leave, or else I'll---" A blue stream of light pierced through Gwen's chest, making her scream in pain. She could feel her energy slowly draining from her body.

"You let her go right now!" Peter said. Unfortunately, the same thing happened to Peter.

"I wanted to do this together! But I suppose you'll have to learn by me killing your girlfriend and you spending the next thousand years as a battery!" Ego said
