Draco, staying true to his word, really did contact his father. He told him how Umbridge punished students by forcing them to write lines in their own blood. Seeing as Lucius Malfoy worked for the Board of Education, Draco thought he would be able to do something to help me. However, his father responded with this:
Draco,
Unless Dolores Umbridge is harming you, I do not care for her punishment methods, especially if it is practised on the Potter girl and her brother. Stay out of trouble, stay away from that harlot and mind your own business.
L.M.
"What's a harlot?" I asked, frowning. It didn't sound all that polite. Draco grimaced and I could tell he didn't want to tell me. Marcus spoke up from his place beside the fire, laying on his stomach and reading a book.
"It's an old term us Brits use for a prostitute," he said, as if it were the most complementary thing in the world. Draco threw him a dark look.
"Thanks, Marcus. That makes me feel loads better," I said, sarcasm dripping from my tongue.
"Look, I'm sure there's another way," Draco insisted, crumpling up the letter and throwing it to the fireplace, not seeming to care much when he missed and hit Marcus in the head instead. "The minister won't stand for this; believe it or not, he actually cares about Hogwarts students,"
"He hates me," I said offhandedly, not really paying attention. I had other things occupying my mind. "Ever since the end of fourth year when I cursed him out. There's no way he'll help me,"
"There has to be something-!"
"Draco, it's okay. Really, she'll be gone by the end of fifth year." I said. Draco looked at me skeptically.
"That woman loves power. You see what she's doing already - soon enough, she's going to try and get rid of Dumbledore and take over the school!"
"Dumbledore wouldn't let that happen, Draco. Hey, did you do your Herbology essay? I still need help with mine," I swiftly changed the topic, reaching in my bag for my half-completed homework on the properties of a strange plant I can't pronounce the name of for the life of me.
"Dumbldore is weak, Evangeline. Umbridge is a Ministry woman, she can get away with murder - or in your case, child abuse!" he was growing heated and I shushed him, hoping not to attract unwanted attention from other students.
"Draco, keep your voice down, will you? I have a lot on my mind already. Now, your essay, please?" I held out my hand. Draco rolled his grey eyes.
"I didn't do it, I have a Troll in that class right now." he said. "What's on your mind?"
"I don't really want to talk about it," I said offhandedly. Draco gave me a look that clearly said 'you don't have a choice' and I chuckled, giving in with a small sad smile.
"It's Hermione," I admitted. "I don't think she likes me much,"
"You mean mud - sorry! Sorry," Draco quickly corrected himself when I held up a textbook threateningly. "What happened? Aren't you supposed to be best friends with her and the Weasley girl?"
"Her name is Ginny, and while she's one of my best friends, Hermione isn't. I mean, she and I are close but she's my brother's best friend. That like his other sister," I explained.
