Pit pat. Pit pat. Pit pat.
Balthazar groaned, his arms tightening around you, nuzzling into your neck.
The pit pat stopped, met by a soft panting for a moment, before a slight scratch and a light weight joined you both on the bed.
Balthazar let out a low growl. "Go away Merrill."
Unfazed, the weight walked up the bed behind him, starting to sniff around his ear, causing him to try and duck his head away.
You stirred a little, causing him to freeze, Merrill taking the opportunity to start licking his face.
Balthazar strangled the groan that rose in his throat, wanting to will the annoying dog away, but knowing that you would probably kill him if he did.
"Merrill..." Your voice was sleepy and quiet, but it got the little black Scottish Terriers attention, quickly walking over Balthazar to join you, giving you kisses as she buries under your arm.
"I don't know how you put up with it." Balthazar grumbles, comfortably settling back against you.
"She's just lonely," You mumble tiredly. "She gets less attention when you're here."
"I have a dog jealous of me, I should feel so proud." He said sarcastically.
You give a snort in amusement, scratching Merrill's ears as she happily panted away. "Cheer up Balthi, there's always a special place for you."
"I hope that's not the only reason I share your bed at night." He growls a little, earning a soft giggle from you.
You twist around to look at him, your eyes still tired but clearly amused. "What? Your special place isn't my bed? How strange."
Balthazar gives a small pout before his lips pressed against yours, effectively waking you up more than what the disturbance had this morning. The kiss continued until Merrill shifted restlessly, moving until she was stretched out across your chest.
You can't help but giggle, breaking away to scratch her head. "Yeah, I get it. It's breakfast time, right?"
Merrill huffs, even as Balthazar rolls his eyes, collapsing onto his back with a groan.
You peck him on the cheek. "She'll be right once I've given her some food."
"Right. Then I suppose she'll want a walk."
You look at him, grinning as you climbed out of bed and threw on a dressing gown. "Balthazar, are you jealous of Merrill?"
"No."
"Uh huh." You scoop Merrill off the bed, her tail wagging. "You keep that thought darling."
He huffs after you, but does not move, listening to your laughter as you left before you started talking to the little dog in your arms. Balthazar sat up, staring at the door for a moment before getting up and snapping himself dressed to follow after you. He knew there was little point in raising anything about Merrill, the two of you had been together too long, so there was no point in being foolish about it either.
Merrill was happily eating away as he entered the kitchen while you watched coffee brewing on the counter, turning as you heard him with a tilt of your head.
"Leaving already?" You asked, a sad note coming to your voice.
Balthazar smiles and shakes his head. "No, of course not, I promise you today, remember? Simply wondering where you would like to go for breakfast?"
You smiled. "What? No angel business today?"
"When have I ever been overly concerned with angel business?" He steps over to you, pulling you into his arms. "The only business I care about is yours."
"Oh? Keen on being involved in hunting?" You teased.
Balthazar blanched. "No, and I would prefer it if you weren't either."
You laughed, placing your hands around his neck. "Only every now and then, after all, hunters only trust psychics so much."
He frowns. "You haven't had any more visions have you?"
You winked. "Only good ones."
Finally catching up, Balthazar grins and chuckles, stepping forward to lead you back towards the bench. There was sudden bark and a flurry of movement around your feet making you both stagger and trip, crashing hard into the bench with a startled yelp.
"Are you alright?" He asked quickly, stepping back.
You rubbed your lower back, wincing slightly. "Yeah," Your gaze went to Merrill, who was standing the back door, alert. "Merrill?"
Merrill huffed from the door, but didn't move.
That was when your vision hit, making you stagger, Balthazar quickly catching you, holding you up as the pain burned through your mind for a moment. Black smoke filled your vision, filled with flashes of white light and glimpses of blood.
You breathed hard as it faded. "Shit."
"Time to go." Balthazar said quickly, nodding, having seen your vision too.
That was when the back door burst open, Merrill instantly barking and taking off outside.
"Merrill no!" You screamed, trying to bolt after her, but Balthazar held you back, even as there was a loud yelp and fear gripped you.
Balthazar didn't miss a beat, sending you away before you could blink. You stared at the hotel room around you, eyes wide, wanting nothing more than to be back there. You didn't realise you were holding your breath, heart pounding loudly in your ears as the time ticked on.
You jumped as Balthazar appeared, Merrill in his arms and a sharp cut down his cheek, but you rushed over to both of them.
Merrill whimpered in Balthazar's arms and you could see the blood, causing you to sob, your hands shaking as you reached out.
"Hang on love." Balthazar said quietly and carefully shifted Merrill in his arms so he can rest a hand on her head, the soft glow of his grace quickly filling the space.
Merrill's head peeked up as the light faded, whimpering again, but this time for a very different reason, tilting her head up as Balthazar removed his hand, kissing after his fingers.
You let a relieved sob, closing the distance and wrapping your arms around the both of them, your eyes shining as you looked up him. "Thank you Balthazar." Your gaze then moved to the cut on his cheek, your eyes wide. "You got-"
"Luckily the demon had poor aim." He wiped his cheek, smiling, the wound vanishing. "And I was hardly going to let her take the brunt of it, no matter how brave she is."
You gave a small laugh and pulled him into a quick kiss before taking Merrill out of his arms, her tail wagging wildly as she yapped happily. "You foolish little puppy, what have I told you about rushing out to danger like that?"
Balthazar smiled as he watched you, a genuine warm smile that he partly wished he could hide, but knew it was the very reason he kept coming to you in the first place. He loved you, and no little dog would ever change that, and maybe, just maybe, he had a little soft spot for Merrill too.
