*In this Thorin, Fili and Kili survive BOTFA, just because it makes me less sad :)*
Strident cheering echoed through the Blue Mountains as news that the company of Thorin Oakenshield had reclaimed Erebor spread like wildfire. Celebrations began immediately and hundreds of dwarves gathered their belongings, ready to set out to a new home. Even you were unable to hide your excitement as you mounted your horse and headed out with the third party...
For months you travelled across the lands, encountering creatures unimaginable. On your journey, you were acquainted with another she-dwarf by the name of Dis. There was something charming about her, almost royal. Her conversation was always interesting, her company was comforting. But she was so mysterious; she hardly spoke of her family, except she enjoyed telling you about her brother, who remained nameless to you. Often she described their childhood, how brave he was, and all of his adventures. Clearly she missed him, wherever he was now. He sounded wonderful, a very noble man indeed. Should you ever meet a man like him, you would be sure to appreciate him at every opportunity- something Dis wished she had done. It was reassuring to have a friend to talk to, considering the circumstances and Dis helped you make the most of it. She never wanted you to find out about her real identity- Princess. She was so afraid you wouldn't treat her the same, and she loved feeling normal around you.
What felt like a lifetime passed, and you arrived outside the gates of Erebor. The group was hurriedly ushered into the grand halls and assigned different quarters. Your room, though plain, was cosy and just right for you. It had a chest of drawers and a writing desk tucked away in one corner. In an adjoining room, there was a double-bed adorned with a lavish cream-coloured duvet and pillows. The company had acquired some furniture from Lake Town, that much was obvious. Placing your rucksack down at the foot of the bed, you took a turn about the chamber. It had a small washroom, a main bedroom and a living room. Honestly, it was magnificent compared to your living arrangements in the Blue Mountains: you had been holed up in what was essentially an unused closet, no bed, no toilet. So the gratitude you felt was practically overwhelming. You found yourself sniffling and wiping away a tear. You weren't too sure when you had begun crying. Perching on the corner of the bed, you tried to calm down a bit. After a moment, a gentle knock came from the door, so you wandered over and opened it. Dis was stood beaming brightly at you but her smile faded when she realised you had been crying. "Y/N? What's wrong?" Concerned, she scurried into the room and closed the door. Leading you to the bed, she placed an arm around you, kindly rubbing your back. You took a deep breath and smiled feebly "I've been dreaming of this place for so long. It's just a bit much to take in." Dis nodded understandingly and hugged you. Then she perked up and exclaimed "I know what will make you feel better- tonight they are holding a ball for all the newcomers! We can go and-" You cut her short "I don't know if I'm really in the mood for dancing." She tutted, ignoring you "...And, you can meet my brother." You looked at her, disbelieving. Her brother was here? How? The idea intrigued you greatly. Your expression remained blank as Dis awaited an answer "Well?" You blinked a few times and then nodded slowly "Let's get ready for a ball." You and Dis scoured the halls for dresses, shoes and jewellery. You opted for a mauve gown with lace sleeves which reached mid-way down your forearm. The bodice was fitted, and had a ribbon around the waist, and the skirt had many layers which gave it a flowing affect as you glided across the floor. It complimented your figure well. Curling your long h/c tresses, you pinned your hair half up. Dis smiled at you, telling you how you looked 'like a real princess'. You slid on some high heels, the way the light reflected off the shoe made them look like they were made of glass.
Later that evening, you received a letter from an old friend of yours from the Blue Mountains. His name was Alford, he worked alongside you for many years and had even tried to court you. You were best friends for many years. Despite his good-looks and humorous manner, you thought of him very much as a friend. This disappointed him but he took it well and did not let it affect your friendship. Or so you thought. In the letter, he stated how he was on his way to Erebor with another party of dwarves. He told you he would arrive at around midnight and it was vital that you met him at the gate for he had news. Alford emphasized how important it was by saying that if you didn't meet him at the stroke of midnight, he would turn away and never come back. Your heart thudded in your chest. You were elated at the idea of being reunited with him after so long but what could be so urgent that he would threaten something like that? Hiding the letter away in your chest of drawers, you tried to push your dark thoughts aside. You could always tell Dis, though you didn't want to worry her and so probably wouldn't. Instead, you waited until the bells rang through the caves, announcing the start of the ball. The sky had darkened quickly and stars now peppered the sky, it was a truly beautiful evening. Dis found you standing outside of the grand doors to the ballroom and told you that she would walk in with you if it made you feel better. She offered you her arm which you took graciously, and together you stepped through the doorway, into what felt like a completely different world.
