Hidden away in a corner of the Prancing Pony, you sipped from your mug of ale and surveyed the room. All was normal, but you knew things in Bree were stirring, darkness was coming, and you weren't going to stick around and wait for it all to go wrong- if you could get to Lothlórien fast enough, you could... Doesn't matter- you'd need a horse and you knew how expensive a good, strong stallion could be. While you brooded over your predicament, a strange, very tall man adorned in grey robes and a pointy hat took a seat next to you and eyed you carefully. You tried to ignore the intruder at first, he was just curious. But then he coughed and you glanced over at him. "It seems you could do with another drink." He suggested with a smile. He got the attention of a waitress who filled your mug up to the top. "There. Now," He rotated to face you more openly "it's not very often you see a female ranger about. What's your name?" The mysterious, somewhat overly-confident man frowned at you. "Blair. Blair Bearnas." You grumbled. He tutted and laughed "I should have known you would not so easily speak to me. It appears to be a hereditary trait in your family to lie to strangers." You shot a look a him. Who was he to firstly, disturb you and then, throw accusations towards you? "Maybe we lie because they are strangers." You retorted. He chuckled at your temper "You always were stubborn, even as a child." He reminisced as if he knew you, but you were certain you had never seen this man in your life- you would have remembered. "Excuse me, but I don't know you, nor do I have the intention to get to, so if you don't mind I'd like to finish my drink alone. Goodnight." Abruptly, you turned your back to him. "I believe you are struggling to remember names tonight. I am Gandalf the Grey, and you are Y/N Y/L/N." Your real name slipped passed his lips in a whisper. Your blood boiled. What did this ignorant man want? "How do you know my name?" You hissed. The man smiled proudly "I know a lot of things. About you, about Bree. And you know why I have come..." He grew solemn. You shivered, your mind rushing back to the time Lady Galadriel had visited you in your home, in the black of night.
"Daughter of Vairë, it has been written that you shall face the Darkness. You will know when the time comes for a soldier in grey will utter your true name, then will come the day when you will face your destiny."
Your insides churned and you glared furiously at the man. "I don't know what your talking about." You growled through gritted teeth. You grabbed your cloak from beside you and stormed through the door, out into the rain and thunder.
Running into the woods, you watched the light from the tavern fade into the distance. All you could hear was the patter of rain around you, mixed with your footsteps through muddy water. Wrapping your cloak tighter around you, you braced against the merciless wind. Suddenly, a dark figure stepped out from behind a tree, almost directly in front of you. You felt your heart stop and fear ripple through your body. Where did they come from?! You gasped and put your hands up to defend yourself. "You can't hide from me Y/N." Gandalf's deep voice rang out. Oh my God. Are you serious? This Gandalf! How did he get there before you? "What do you want from me?!" You shrieked at him. "Don't work yourself up. It's not what I want, it's what the universe wants." He stated. "You speak in riddles. What does the Universe want from me? I'm not important." You shook your head in disbelief. "On the contrary, you Y/N, are the lost daughter of Vairë." Gandalf watched you closely for a reaction. You scoffed "That's absurd. I won't waste anymore time on you, you are clearly insane." You snarled and marched away. Gandalf stepped in your way, appearing to grow in height. Shadows clouded around him and he towered above you. He boomed "Y/N, your mother was the Weaver of the stories of the World, and she just so happened to include you in her most famous tapestry. Vairë wanted you to save Middle Earth. She knew you would be able to and so you will. You were lost on the journey to Valinor as a child; I will admit that may have been somewhat my fault, but now I am taking responsibility and making sure you fulfil your role." Gandalf finished, shrinking again. You grimaced at him "I have no role. I am a Ranger of the North. I refuse to listen to this nonsense." Once again, you walked away. Gandalf called after you "Where are you going?" You replied "Anywhere you're not." There was no noise for a moment and you thought Gandalf had gone but then he said more gently "One day soon, you will realise you can't hide from your fate forever, Y/N." He sighed. Threateningly you whirled to face him and sneered "Watch me."
Before you turned away, Gandalf whistled and a grand, chocolate-brown horse appeared. "This is Biscuit. He's yours if you will have him." You stared in awe at the magnificent creature. Approaching it, you held a hand out. Biscuit inspected it first and then nuzzled into it. You smiled "Why do I have to do this?" You felt tears in your eyes. Gandalf looked at you sadly "Because you were born and bred to fight. This is your fight. Not common criminals who hide in the North. Not thieves and muggers. The destruction of the Darkness is your calling. You must answer." You shut your eyes and felt tears tumble over your cheeks. Galadriel was right. Opening your eyes, you realised Gandalf had vanished. You stroked Biscuit lovingly.
Turns out you were going to Lothlórien after all.
Okay so this was different, I know, but I liked the concept. Let me know if you guys did too in the comments! And I'm sorry that this one's a bit short but I think what I'll do is write a part two in the future and add to it- I think this was a nice way to set the story up. Don't forget to add/vote/request because it helps me out unbelievably. I'll see you guys for the next update <3
