Chapter 36- Comatose
Kensi's POV
I stood frozen in the hallway of the emergency ward, staring out of a window that displayed the array of ambulances down below. Deeks has been in surgery for almost five hours, and I've heard nothing about how his status. Everytime a nurse or doctor walks out of the large double doors, I fell like someone is going to tell me he's dead. My fingers tightened around his badge, which was hidden in my jacket pocket. The last time I was worrying about his life, I was holding onto his LAPD credentials. This time they have NCIS enscribed on the shiny gold badge, but the feeling of grief is still the same.
A young doctor walked out of the double doors. He was probably only 30, but the sleep deprevation and constant stress made him look more like 45. There were streaks of blood staining his blue scrubs, and a vile containing a bullet in his latex gloved hands.
"NCIS?" He asked carefully. I quickly flashed my badge, and nodded. He handed me the bullet, and I slipped it into my pocket. "The nurses are cleaning Agent Deeks up, and he'll live, but there is a little bit of bad news. We did lose him a few times during the procedure due to blood loss, shock, and the toll of surgery, but he seemed to make it out okay. As we were finishing up, however, one of the doctors noticed signs of swelling in the brain, which could lead to some brain damage. We were forced to put him in an induced coma until the swelling goes down. I will order an MRI for him as soon as I can."
I sat down on the bench to try and process this.
"So, he's gonna wake up, right? He'll be awake soon?" I looked up at the bloody, exhausted doctor sadly. He turned away guilily.
"The thing with head trauma is that it can be unpredictable. If this swelling turns out to be something more serious, then that just makes Agent Deeks' time asleep a bit longer. We'll know more after we get an MRI."
"Okay, thanks Doc." I stood up and started walking away before he could see me start to cry.
"Oh, and if it helps you get they guy," He called after me. I turned around and looked at him curiously. "Whoever did this knew what he was doing, maybe had medical experience. It's really hard to stab someone as many times as Agent Deeks was, and not hit anything that could kill him quickly."
"Thanks, that could actually help." I smiled, and pushed through the doors, into the hallway.
I immedially found the nearest bathroom, went into the stall, and got all my crying over with. If I'm gonna find the son of a bitch that put Deeks in a freakin' coma, I can't have all these feelings affecting me. Twenty minutes and a quick make up touch up later, I was ready to do this. I clicked Callen's speed dial, and waited three rings before he finally picked up.
Callen: Hey Kens, what's the word on Deeks?
Me: He made it off the table, but they had to put him in a coma because of some brain damage.
Callen: Damn. Okay, we were just about to leave the crime scene to come see him, but there's no point if he can't answer some questions.
Me: The doctor said the guy who did this might have had some medical training. He knew exactally where to stab so Deeks could stay alive longer.
Callen: This guy is definatly a pro. Maybe guns for hire.
Me: Are you suggesting King hired a hitman to kill Deeks after he was dead?
Callen: Kensi, we still don't know for sure if King is behind this. You can't just assume-"
Me: I'm not assuming anything, Callen. I know he had something to do with this, and I'm going to find out what.
