Our reader Laohg, asked us to go in special research assignment to find out a vampire older and more powerful than gods. Well, we don't know much about divinity, let alone their strength contests... but what we can try and pinpoint the oldest vampire on record. Terrifying as they are, they surely found a way in some or other pantheon.

We checked several sources and all roads lead to the fertile crescent, a little over six thousand years ago. It seems the cradle of civilization is also the home of infamous monsters. It is only right, we guess. Wherever humans go, they carry their fears on their backs.

But getting back to darklings of the first order, it is safe to say that the first vampire-like beings were the Ekimmu. Taking a closer look at these creatures, they seem to be a chimera of sorts, combining traits of monsters that have a ring of the familiar. They could show up either in their physical form (as an eternally rotting corpse) or project themselves as spirits (something close to our idea of a wraith).

Though deteriorated in appearance, they didn't miss a bit. Unlike zombies, they preserved both awareness and intelligence, set on avenging wrongs committed against them. (The Ekimmu could hold a grudge as to raise from the grave).

As many classic vampires, their wrath was directed to their next of kin. See, the Ekimmu comes to be when someone does not follow the right funeral procedures. So, uncle cheapskate that though the bargain shroud would do grandma good, was in for a surprise...

Their thirst for revenge didn't stop once they took it out on family, though. At first, they sustained their cravings for blood on their relatives, which made them grow stronger and develop new traits, as astral projection and psychic feeding. Not only they drank blood, but fed on life force, their reach extending beyond human to all things living.

The final extent, the top of their power, was the ability to control changes in climate, bring about natural disasters and twist the minds of humans into blind compliance; all as a means to their end, which was total annihilation of life.

There is no known way to defeat an Ekimmu, other than preventing their rise by being nice to the dead... isn't that something?
