I almost didn't do the whole thing where the real Marigold died as a child, and the current Marigold is just a buffer to contain the Syramin. The idea came up when I was brainstorming but I thought it was too cruel so I pitched it. It came back when I realized it for the story so well.
There are a few things that I feel are cruel for an author to do to a character. That was one of them. The other is taking away a character's ability to have a child.
