I'd been sworn to secrecy by Klarke when I'd left the room the day before. He'd said to keep everything between the few people who already knew what was going on. None of those people were Steele. That had worried me.
I hadn't done anything to Thomas, I'd barely been able to meet his gaze. In fact, I had turned right around, put the weapons away and left the room. I'd given the excuse that I had an emergency back home to deal with and Klarke had immediately given me the gag order.
I went back to Jared, but I'd been an absolute wreck. I needed to tell him. He knew Thomas, I didn't know how well he knew him, but he did. I couldn't keep something like that from him, not when I was trying to change. Trying, but it seemed Klarke had ideas to turn me into something far worse than what I'd been.
I'd kept silent that night, but Jared had known something was up. He'd asked, but I'd silently shrugged the question off. I was caught between being truthful, and being caught by Klarke. I wasn't sure how he would know if I told Jared, but I was worried that somehow he would.
When I'd woken in the morning though, he was on his side staring at me.
"Hi," I said with a half smile.
"Hi."
Jared leaned over and kissed my forehead between my brows.
"Are you going to tell me what's been bothering you since you got home yesterday?"
I chewed on my bottom lip. I was still torn between confiding in him, letting him know what was going on with a person he obviously knew, and doing what I was told.
"You can tell me what's going on." There was hurt in his voice. He thought I didn't trust him enough to tell him. That wasn't it at all.
"They--we have a werewolf. We're keeping him there to get information from him. He knows something about a group of werewolves that they've been after."
"What are they going to do to him?" James asked as he stepped back slightly.
"I don't know, but Jared, it's Thomas Bradly. That guy I saw you talking to at the pub."
"What? You have to get him out of there. They're going to kill him."
"Why would they do that?" I asked. Given what I'd heard from Klarke, it was a possibility. They were making me torture him after all, or they were going to make me torture him. I was curious why Jared would jump to that conclusion though.
"Because of who he is. He wasn't exactly the best person before. He was involved with some not so good people. I ran into him and his pack one time when we visited London. It was shortly after I'd been turned and apparently it had made me stick out like a sore thumb."
"What did they do?"
"They didn't do anything, mostly because Thomas had helped me get away from them and off their radar. They'd thought I was moving in on their territory. He was still with them at that time, but I think he was close to leaving. He saw me in the bar when we first got here and we talked for a bit. He's been away from them for a while now."
"So you think The Torch will kill him?"
"You don't think they would?"
"I don't know," I murmured.
It wasn't the truth, and I knew Jared could tell. He backed away and got out of the bed. I sat up and watched him as he went around the room, first throwing on a t-shirt before changing out of the pajama bottoms and into jeans. He was deathly silent the whole time, not looking my way.
