K Olinger is Appalachian American by descent and by choice. She attended prestigious Berea College in Kentucky for one year, publishing three poems in the 1977 volume of Twenty Writers. 

After marrying, she left college but eventually was called to return. She completed her undergraduate education in 1993, with a 3.8 GPA and a B. A. in History, from Eastern Kentucky University. In 1994, she had her fifth and last child, the youngest of two sons and three daughters. She is divorced.

Ms. Olinger counts Eric Flint (1632 series), Robert Jordan (Eye of the World series), Jim Butcher (Dresden series), James Patterson, Terry Brooks (Shannara, etc.) Dean Koontz, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Anne Rice among her favorite writers. TV series she enjoys include The Twilight Zone, Firefly, Supernatural, Lucifer, The Walking Dead, and Dr. Who. She enjoys movies from many different genres, including action, sci-fi, fantasy, and supernatural thrillers.

Although writing, reading, and learning are her main joys in life, she has worked many different jobs, whatever it took to support her family and instill a good work ethic in her children. She has worked in skilled production, as a factory equipment operator, as a library and media resources assistant, a catering assistant and crew manager, and even as a state certified psychiatric care technician.

Ms Olinger lives in the mountains, near family and the people she loves.
