Irreversible choices (A Tokyo Ghoul fanfic)

A fateful day

The only reason why you go to Ainteiku is to see that cute boy. He always sits at the same table, orders the same coffee, and talks with the same friend. You've also seen him walk around campus a few times. You heard is name once, Kaneki Ken was it? And is best friend Hideyoshi Nagachika. You've tried to talk to him a few times in the past, but you could never gather enough courage to do so. Until now.

As you stood up, you saw Kaneki stand up, and walk towards a table where a purple haired woman with glasses is seated. Now you were standing behind Hideyoshi. He looked back to see the sad look on your face. "Something happened to you miss?" He asked. You woke up from your dream world. "O-oh... It's nothing... heh." You sighed.

"I'm Hideyoshi Nagachika, but you can call me Hide if you like." Hideyoshi, actually Hide, introduced himself. "Nice to meet you, I'm F/n L/n." You answered, trying not to look over at Kaneki-kun talking to that woman. "So where were you planning on going to?" Hide suddenly asked. "Excuse me?" You responded confused.

"You stood up and were about to walk somewhere... Remember how you did that just a minute ago?" Hide laughed. His laugh gave you a warm feeling. As you looked into his eyes ready to respond, a shadow falls over you. You looked back and see Kaneki standing there. You could feel your face turning all red, butterflies starting to flutter in you stomach. Maybe even some drool escaping from your mouth.

"Hide, are you going to introduce me?" He said. "Yeah, sorry forgot about that. This is F/n L/n. F/n, this is Kaneki Ken." Hide explained. "You can call me Kaneki." Kaneki smiled. There goes your heart, flying out the window at the mere sight of his smile.

"So Kaneki, how did it go with Rice-san?" Hide asked his friend. "Hide, for the last time, she is called Rize-san, with a z... But it went really well. We're going out tonight." As Kaneki said this, you could see your heart that had fluttered away, bump into the wall and smash into millions of tiny pieces. How come the day you had finally gathered up courage to ask Kaneki out, he had to ask another woman out. You tried not to look sad as you ask the boys something. "Kaneki-kun likes Rize-san?" You noticed that your sadness was able to be heard through your voice. 

"Kaneki and Rize-san are like to halves. They read the same books, they drink the same. They probably even dream about the same stuff." Was there a guy glueing your heart back together to smash it against the wall once more? Could this day even get worse? 

"Don't listen to what that idiot is saying F/n. But anyways, there's something about her... I don't know what exactly, but it makes me feel safe. Must sound strange huh?" It looked like Kaneki had started daydreaming. You looked over at Rize-san, seeing an expression of triumph on her face. In the background you heared Hide and Kaneki talking, and Kanekis hand waving in front of your eyes brought you back to reality. "Earth to F/n. I asked what are you majoring in? I've seen you at the university a couple of times. No wonder your face was familiar. Not to mention I've also seen you staring at me a few times from that table over there." Kaneki said, pointing to the table you were sitting at until a few moments ago. 

"I'm majoring in English literature. And I don't stare I space out and coincidentally I'm looking at you when that happens." You tried to come up with a good excuse. So he noticed you staring at him. Well done myself, good thing I just have to stare everytime he's here. With his brains of course he would've noticed you idiot. Are your thoughts at the moment. "Of course, spacing out. Should've known that." Kaneki joked and you heared Hide laughing at his comment. "So English literature huh? Interesting." He mumbled. 

Kaneki looked at you in the eyes and for a few seconds the world around you disappeared and you enter a world with just Kaneki and you. After a while, Kaneki looked away to watch the news. In the one of the corners of Anteiku, hangs a television on the wall. "Another ghoul attack last night. It's been the 5th one this month. The CCG is still investigating this case, but it seems like it's another victim of the Binge eater. We will tell you more about this case when the CCG has found evidence of this attack." The newsreporter said from the other side of the screen. 

"I't's getting pretty serious, all these ghoul attacks. Imagine that the Binge eater would be right under our noses without us knowing." Hide said lost in thought. You start looking around, wondering how many people in this room could be a ghoul. But with all those investigators walking around, how could the ghouls just go out like normal people? Even act like normal people. You looked at Rize-san, and deep in your heart you hope that she's a ghoul and the CCG finds her and kills her. Because of her, Kaneki asked her out right when you were about to do the same thing to him. Jealousy was starting to bubble up inside you.

"F/n, are you okay? You look constipated." Hide said dryly. You looked at him with a serious face, your look sending chills down his spine. "S-sorry... Please don't kill me... I promise I won't say anything like that again... Just don't hurt me okay?" He said apologizing. From the corner of your eye you could see Kaneki trying to hold in his laughter. A small smile starts appearing on your face, and you just keep looking at Hide. But your serious face didn't last long, and soon all three of you were laughing.

You spent the rest of the afternoon with Kaneki and Hide, talking about hobbies and school. At the time to say goodbye, you discovered that you and Hide have to walk the same way to get home. It remaind silent for a while, until you decided to speak. "So Hide... What do you plan on doing after college?" You asked. "I'm not sure yet. If the ghoul problems keep getting worse, I might consider working at the CCG..." He said. The CCG huh? Hide must be pretty brave to even consider working there. A lot of investigators have died trying to hunt down some of the most dangerous ghouls.

"Why such the long face? It's not like you're a ghoul right?" He said joking. "Why would you think I would be a ghoul Hide? You saw me eat at Anteiku right? Ghouls can't do that." You defended yourself. "That's right. And you didn't even go to the bathroom after eating. Or did you?" He said eyeing you suspiciously. You laughed and pushed him softly. "So, F/n. Do you like Kaneki?" Hide suddenly asked out of nowhere. 

"Why would you think that?" You responded with a question. "Because you always look at him when you're in Anteiku. And everytime Rize-san would be mentioned, your face would look sad. And by the way, why do you always answer my questions with another question?" He said seriously. 

So Hide noticed. He must be good at noticing how someone feels, no matter how hard they try to hide their feelings. After Hides answer, you both stayed quiet for the rest of the way back home. 

Finally having reached home, you saw your parents were either still working, or already sleeping. When you entered your house, you went to see if they were already in bed. You saw two figures sleeping soundly. You decided to leave them alone and go to your room quietly. Even  though it was just 7 pm, your parents were too exausted that they would normally sleep 'till 9 pm. The they would eat something and go back to bed.

You decided to cook a meal for yourself and go to your room to study. 

The next morning you woke up, and realized you had fallen asleep while studying. Your parents must have come into your room to see how you were doing, and saw you were sleeping so they put a blanket on your shoulders. You went to get breakfast, and you saw that your parents were still home. Breakfast with them is always fun. Your dad turned the tv on, and you saw the headline. A new Binge eater victim it said. "A nineteen tear old boy has fallen victim to the Binge eater. Luckily the building they were in collapsed and the ghoul was crushed. All though the boy was severly wounded, he was taken to the hospital and had organs transplanted. The boy is now recovering."

After hearing this a picture of Kaneki in the hospital showed up on the screen. Kaneki was the victim? Does this mean that Rize-san was actually a ghoul and is now dead? But the news lady kept on talking. "The Binge eaters body hasn't been found in the collapsed building yet. It can be that the Binge eater succesfuly escaped before the CCG investigators arrived." 

So yesterdays date that Kaneki was supposed to have with Rize, was actually a set-up? You stood up and without saying anything to your parents, ran away. 

Kaneki... How could she do this to you?
