Beth POV
As we entered the Uchiha bunker, I felt my breathing quicken. Underground once again, trapped, suffocated. I felt the air grow thick and stale as it caught in my lungs. My chest rose and fell with an unhealthy rhythm, my panic rising. Sensing my unease, Sasuke placed a hand on the back on my neck, his touch soothing.
"I'm okay." I stated, giving him a gentle smile. He raised an eyebrow, scrutinizing my words. "I promise." I insisted. Sasuke seemed to accept this for the time being, taking his hand off of me as we made our way into the main room of the bunker. The darkness swallowed us, Karin tensing at the sudden burst of light as all the torches in the room suddenly roared to life. In the back of the room, stood Itachi.
"You've recently been liberated from an underground prison and yet you come here?" Itachi called, his voice monotonous.
"There are more important things than my claustrophobia." I began, pulling out the small black pull-tie bag from my weapons pouch.
"The eye." Itachi whispered, visibly shocked.
"I didn't give you the real one. I have to admit, I was tempted to use genjutsu to mask the true location of the eye, but I knew Tobi would immediately see through that. So, I had to use the basics. Sleight of hand."
"You never cease to surprise, Beth." Itachi claimed, walking over to us.
"Yet, you know what I intend to do with this eye, don't you Itachi?" I prodded, staring deeply into the Uchiha's eyes.
"To achieve the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, the eyes need to be that of a close blood relative." Itachi lectured.
"Preferably that of a sibling." I continued. "That's why Sasuke and Karin are here."
"I don't understand, what is going on?" Karin asked, her glance shifting between Itachi, Sasuke and I.
"She wants to implant Shisui's eyes into my own, thereby providing me with the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. By possessing the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, all my ailments caused from overusing the Mangekyo Sharingan will be healed." Itachi explained, his eyes never leaving my own.
"That's possible?" Sasuke exclaimed, turning to me.
"Like I said before, the eyes need to be of a close blood relation." Itachi countered, shifting his gaze to his younger brother.
"Like I said before, that's why Sasuke and Karin are here." I repeated. "With Karin's help we should be able to infuse Sasuke's genetic material into the eyes themselves. As a result, we should be able to implant them into you and give you the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan." Itachi remained silent for quite a while, mulling over the chance at life I had just placed within his grasp. After a few minutes had passed, I watched as Sasuke grew impatient, the idea that his brother was even contemplating rejecting the offer, unacceptable.
"Let's try it." Sasuke eventually concluded, taking the initiative away from his brother.
"No." Itachi protested.
"What are you talking about?" Sasuke asked, anger rising in his voice.
"I will not take the eyes. Sasuke will, and you will use my genetic material to implant them." Closing my eyes, I sighed. I should have expected Itachi to make this decision. He had never forgiven himself for the Uchiha massacre, the eventual redemption granted unto him by his death being the only thing keeping him going. Itachi didn't want to be cured, he didn't want to live with the memory of his misdeeds. And so once again, he put his little brother first.
"Itachi, I know you believe that you deserve to die for your crimes. But if Sasuke can forgive you then why can't you forgive yourself?" I pleaded, a slight whine to my voice.
