“Dyson!” I shrieked, already feeling myself get dizzy from the sight of all the blood. There was just so much blood blending with the melting snow. I felt my body sway and my stomach clench as I ran towards his limp body. The tears were already slicing down my face.
I didn’t get very far before my stomach objected. I turned away from his body just enough to empty the contents of my stomach into a nearby isle before turning back to Dyson. I couldn’t pass out, he needed me to be strong.
“I need to stay strong.” I whispered to myself, wiping the vile taste from the corners of my mouth. The wind was blowing my hair back, behind me, keeping it out of my face. I felt the sting of the snow smacking me in the face as I knelt down to Dyson, forcing myself to not pass out. I fought against the wave of fogginess in my brain to stay on my knees and hovering over his body. “Dyson, wake up.” I sobbed. “Please just wake up, I’m sorry, okay? I’m sorry, just wake up. Dyson!” I wailed in a panic, frantically shaking his limp, cold shoulder. His whole body was lacking its usual warmth.
After a small moment of utter panic, I had to think. “Okay, Tyler. Think think think.” I told myself. I had to remember what to do. Hell, I had no idea what to do! Dyson was the only one who knew what to do! The cold was numbing away at the last of my warmth but that didn’t matter to me, I just had to help Dyson. He can’t die. I can’t let him die too. This can’t happen again.
I looked down helplessly at him and realized that all of the blood was coming from his head. His head… And then, like a mental light bulb, I had an idea. What did Dyson to for me when I hit my head? Surely, I didn’t bleed as much, but it was all I had to go on.
“Ice.” I recalled to myself. “Band- Aids, aspirin, and pillows.”
I bent down and kissed Dyson’s cheek (no, there was no blood on his cheek) and whispered, “I’ll be right back.”
With that, I stood back up and ran as fast as I could towards the pharmacy which was luckily just down the hallway from the Hallmark. I ran into the store as fast as I could ever run and hurried through the shelves, my hands were shaking violently and they were covered in blood, along with my hoodie and everything else that I was wearing.
“Ice.” I reminded myself, running towards the small freezer display where they kept premade ice packs. I felt incredibly stupid when I remembered that the electricity wasn’t on. Electricity runs the frikkin’ freezer. The freezer that now held about twenty floppy bags of water. “Crap.” I muttered, hurrying towards the bandages but couldn’t find the small kind that Dyson had used on me. In a rush, I just grabbed the first one that I saw which happened to be eye patches. After grabbing a bottle of aspirin, I got a pillow from the store next door and then ran for the Hallmark store again.
I ran, ignoring the searing burn in my lungs until I felt my slipper slip (go figure) out from underneath of me, sending me flying to the ground. But not without catching my ankle in a weird way and sending a nearly excruciating pain into my ankle. I let out a strangled scream but refused to look at my ankle, fearing that it would be in some twisted ankle with the bone sticking out or something. I was still dizzy from Dyson’s blood, I definitely couldn’t handle my own.
“Dyson.” I reminded myself, gathering the items off of the ground where they landed when I fell and then using a cell phone kiosk to hoist myself up to my foot. I quickly limped all the way to the Hallmark store, yelping or cursing whenever I stepped on my poor left foot.
When I got back inside, I dropped the pills and eye patches next to Dyson and dropped to my knees, pushing his head up so that I could fit the pillow under his head.
Now, I just need to wash away all of this blood. I thought to myself and cursing when I remembered that I forgot to get a rag or something. I looked around the store for anything that was fabric and quickly landed on a rack of tangled fashion scarves. I limped my way over to them, not letting the heavy and loud wind push me over. I tried to be aware of flying merchandise, and was lucky to dodge a whirling Christmas ornament. Other than that, nothing was on the attack when I grabbed the scarf and kneeled back down at Dyson’s side.
“It’s going to be okay.” I whispered to him. “I won’t let you die too.”
I dipped the scarf into the heavy snow that was piling up. I should have moved Dyson, but I was too weak, especially with my ankle in the condition that it was in. The snow quickly melted onto the scarf and I frantically dabbed the blood away from the cut with my trembling hands. It didn’t help that the blood was making me want to throw up again or that it was washing me over with dizziness. But I couldn’t let that happen, I couldn’t just pass out because he needed me. Dyson needed me and I couldn’t let him down. Once the cut was clean enough, I could see that it was about an inch long right above his right eyebrow, and still bleeding slowly .
It was almost a good thing that I used an eye patch because there was no way that I could have put one of those tiny Band- Aids on his cut with my body trembling so horribly from both the cold and the extreme panic.
“I still need ice.” I sobbed, looking around the store once again, praying for some idea to just magically pop into my head. And then there it was. I quickly limped over to the counter, biting my tongue to swallow down the excruciating pain in my ankle. I held onto the shelves so that the heavy wind didn’t knock me down
I grabbed one of the shopping bags that were hidden behind the small counter and luckily, not being tossed around by the unforgiving wind. When I turned back around to get back to Dyson, the wind finally won me over and I was on my butt. Too exhausted to try and stand up again, I just decided to crawl to Dyson instead of fight the wind. I felt drenched, all of the clothes that I were wearing were soaked. If it was from the snow or from Dyson’s blood, I don’t know. Probably a little bit of both.
“Dyson, come on, wake up.” I blubbered, filling the plastic bag with the blizzard snow. It only took a quick moment before the bag was packed with the light snow and ready for use. Before I put the bag down on Dyson’s cut, I wrapped the scarf around the bag so that it wasn’t too cold on his skin and I placed it on his forehead, sitting beside him.
I wished that I could crawl into his warmth, but at the moment, he was lacking his usual abnormal heat and it was replaced by a freezing cold on his now pale skin. He didn’t look enough like Dyson, he looked… lifeless.
That word just felt so wrong. Of course he wasn’t lifeless, he had to be alive! He just had to be because I won’t let him die. But the more I looked at him, the more it felt true. The more I talked myself into believing that he was dead. I really wish I knew how to look for a pulse, then I could tell myself that he was alive and he’ll be okay. But I can’t check pulses… Dyson can. Gosh, I wish it was me and not him, at least he would know what to do right now to help me. He could have carried me out of the snow and actually fixed the cut on my head instead of whatever the heck I did. I wish it was me that was laying in the snow unconscious right now. I’d give anything to trade him places. I’d rather be the one dead. Dead… No. Of course Dyson is alive.
“You’re alive!” I yelled at him. “Just wake up. Please.” I added in a whisper as I fell into another layer of sobs. “Dyson!” I shrieked. “Just wake up!” I leaned down and put my purple lips to his cheek. “You’re scaring me.”
When he didn’t respond, I convinced myself that it was over. I’d killed him. It was all my fault. This whole thing was my fault.
Everything just took over and I let the dizziness in my head finally take over my whole body as I crashed and everything went black.
