a call to action

Peter was anxious to be anywhere other than in history class. He had been taught all of this information year and year again, yet they still drill it in his head every 4th period of the day. He put his head in his chin absentmindedly and jotted down the notes Ms. Joyce told her class to write.

He checked the clock; 12:10 - still half an hour before lunch started.

And it was Friday, and that meant a weekend at the tower while May worked her double shifts. He couldn't wait to finally have that Mario Kart tournament with Clint, Bucky, and Scott; or have another sparring match with Natasha and Hope; or go on a morning run with Steve and Sam; or learn more about Asgardian history from Thor and Loki; maybe help Bruce and Pepper with their work while Wanda and Vision were on vacation. But he absolutely couldn't wait to spend time with Tony. They could be working in the lab, fighting bad guys, or even just watching a movie, but Peter loved spending the time with him. Tony was without a doubt his favorite.

In all honesty, a mission sounded so cool in that moment. Peter pictured himself chasing down high speed robbers or jumping from absurd heights to catch a shooter off guard. The thrill was incredibly enticing. It sure would be a lot more exciting than what the Mongols conquered centuries ago.

Peter's phone vibrated in his pocket suddenly, making him gasp softly. Ned, sitting in the desk right next to him, turned to his best friend with a look of worry.

"You alright?" he whispered, as not to distract their teacher.

Peter checked his phone to find an urgent text from none other than Tony Stark.

Need you asap. Mission.

What kind of luck did he have today?

Peter looked at Ned with a smirk. "Tony needs me for a mission," he whispered.

"Parker!" Ms. Joyce suddenly yelled out.

Peter's head popped out from his seat with raised eyebrows, "Yes ma'am?"

Ms. Joyce looked at a small slip of paper in her hand with furrowed eyebrows. "You have an early dismissal, with - wait, what?"

Peter was beginning to pack his things into his backpack when Ms. Joyce walked to his desk.

"Who's signature is that, Mr. Parker?" she asked with a raised eyebrow, "Because it sure doesn't look like your Aunt's."

Peter tilted his head in confusion and took the paper from her, immediately recognizing the signature. Tony's handwriting was scratchy along the line, the vague letters of 'T' and 'S' standing out abruptly.

Peter took a deep breath. Tony was usually good with forging May's signature, but with the rush of the mission, it must've slipped his mind.

"Oh, sorry ma'am," Peter stuttered, unsure of why he was so nervous, "that's my boss's signature. For an internship for-"

Peter was cut off by his history teacher groaning loudly. "Peter, even I have heard about the nonsense you're spewing about Tony Stark. Would you please give it a rest, for the sake of your reputation? We all know high schoolers aren't given internships."

The teenager was taken back by her calm outburst. Did teachers really talk about him like that?

"Ma'am, I can assure you that it's not a lie," Peter felt his phone buzz in his pocket, knowing that it was Tony urging him to join the mission. He didn't want to waste time arguing over the facts he already knew to be true, "If I can call my Aunt and have her confirm my dismissal, would that be enough?"

"FaceTime her," Ms. Joyce said sternly, "I want to make sure it's actually her."

Peter sighed but pulled out his phone quickly, not wanting to waste anymore time for the sake of the mission and his classmates.

He pulled up the list of his contacts, Tony, May, Ned and MJ being in his favorites already. He clicked on the button to video call his Aunt, and waited. It was around lunchtime so he knew she'd be on break.

"Peter? Is everything alright?" her voice rang through the classroom and Peter was suddenly very embarrassed about the entire situation.

He cleared his throat and nodded. "Yeah, Aunt May; everything's alright. Ms. Joyce just wants to make sure that this dismissal from my boss is legit and you're alright with it."

Ms. Joyce positioned herself onto the screen. "Yes ma'am, sorry to bother you. I've never seen this signature on any of Peter's forms and I want to make sure it's safe to let him go."

"Let me see the signature?" May said. Ms. Joyce put the slip up to the camera. May didn't have to look at it twice to recognize the billionaire's signature.

She laughed softly. "Of course it's alright. There's nobody safer for Peter than him."

Ms. Joyce sucked in a breath and nodded. "Thank you for your time."

"Love you May, thanks again," Peter said quietly, "see you soon."

"Love you, bye."

Peter hung up the call and turned to his teacher with red cheeks. "Sorry for taking up so much of class time, Ms. Joyce."

The woman picked up Peter's bag for him with an apologetic smile. "That's alright. There's one more page of notes, anyways." She handed Peter the slip and let him out of her classroom. Peter waved to Ned and slipped out silently.

Once out the door, Peter sprinted down the empty hallways. Tony was waiting for him outside, Iron Man suit already on.

"What took so long, Underoos?" he asked.

"Bit of a mix up, don't worry about it." The teenage superhero checked the city for people, and when he found it barren, slipped his mask over his head, following Tony to the action.
