They just never listened! Why wouldn't they let her go out? It's completely safe and she can swim. The currents aren't that bad. They can watch her, for Pete's sake! All Melody wants is to be free, to swim with the fishes and adventure underwater.
But every time she says something to her parents, they tell her no and continue with their duties. It irritates Melody to the bone. She will be free if it's the last thing she'll do! She'll run away, yes. But... she loves her parents too much to possibly leave them, and there's no way she'd be able to survive for long out in the water...
Melody sighed. There was nothing she could do. She'd do anything to be free, anything. Melody was tired of being cooped up in a castle, staying behind a wall. If there was someway...
Wait, Melody thought. What did I read in the library the other day? Something about mermaids?
Melody stood from her chair and darted toward the library. Maybe she could learn something from a mermaid book. As ridiculous as it sounds, Melody didn't care. By now, she'd try anything. Even if it were as crazy as mermaids.
She skidded to a stop as she stood in front of the book placed on the table. Melody looked around, no one was in the library. A piece of paper was set neatly on top of the book. It read; Sewing needle, thread, bandages, and scissors. Melody found it to be a weird list. She pushed it aside and opened up the book.
"Mermaids are mythical creatures believed to have the torso of a human and tail of a fish," Melody read aloud. "These beautiful creatures can breath underwater, as well as on land."
A picture was painted on the page beside it. Oddly, it looked alot like Melody's mother, but the eyes were red instead of blue. Melody turned the page. Someone had scribbled on the original writing and Melody couldn't understand a word it read, so she turned the page again. What was on that page would change Melody's life.
"To become like one of these creatures, a person must leave everything they have on land. Family, personal prised possessions, anything. Next, they have to somehow connect their limbs together to form a tail."
Melody sat back in her seat, staring at the last line. Connect their limbs to form a tail. How in the world would she do that? She couldn't do anything about it. That was it, she couldn't become a mermaid.
Just as she was about to close the book, her mind drifted back to the piece of paper that was on the book when she walked in. Melody dropped the book on the table and picked the piece of paper up. Could that work? If it didn't, no harm would be done... right? She would at least try.
Melody made up her mind.
She would sew her legs together.
~
Ariel was on her way to the dinning hall. She hadn't seen Melody all day, and was hoping she would be at dinner. Just as Ariel walked past Melody's room, she heard crying. Melody usually didn't cry, so Ariel found it odd that she heard it. Ariel knocked on her door. "Melody? Honey, are you alright?"
She heard a sob, "N-no! Don't come in here!"
She heard Melody doing something, then a loud thump and a cry. Ariel had heard enough. She pushed the door open. Melody was on the floor, tears running down her cheeks. A blanket covered her lower body. Something red stained Melody's fingertips.
"Mother," Melody cried. "I'm sorry."
Ariel walked over to her daughter. She kneeled down, watching Melody with a puzzled look. She grabbed the blanket and ripped it off, which only made Melody cry louder.
Several lines of thread were sewn in Melody's legs. It started at her thighs and stopped at her now joined toes. Blood poured from multiple wounds in the child's legs. The thread looked as if it broke in certain places, so Melody tied another piece of thread and resewn it.
Ariel looked at Melody, her jaw dropped. Her hand covered her hand. How could anyone do this? Why did she do this? "Melody... w-why-"
"I'm so-sorry," Melody replied. "I wanted to be a mermaid."
"Mermaids don't exist," Ariel snapped.
"They do! They do!" Melody said. She tried to move, but pain shot up her legs and she screamed. Ariel didn't know what to do. Her daughter's legs were sewn together! "Mother... we can be mermaids... together..."
Ariel stared at her daughter. "No we can't. Now, I'm going to lift you up and-"
"No," Melody said, her voice stern. "Mom, I can sew your legs for you and-"
"Melody, stop it." Ariel was scared now. What as her daughter saying? Ariel started to stand, but Melody grabbed her wrist and pulled her back down.
"Mother, please... let's be mermaids together..."
Before Ariel could do anything, Melody used all of her remaining strength to push Ariel on her back. She grabbed her ankle, pulled out the needle from her own leg, and slowly slipped the needle into her mother's ankle. Ariel screamed, and as much as she didn't want to, kicked back with her other leg. Her heel slammed its way into Melody's eye.
By now, it doesn't even phase Melody as much. She just yelled, but continued to sew. She brought the needle out and pinched Ariel's other leg. To prevent her from kicking, Melody held her down with her other arm.
"Melody, stop!"
She didn't. She ripped the thread through the flesh, chunks of blood attached to the line, and crossed over to her right leg. Without hesitation, Melody slammed the sharp point into the meat. She pushed her thumb into the tiny hole made by the needle, and once the point stuck out, she pulled it, and another fine glob of blood dripped from the thread.
Ariel had to do anything to get anything to get away. She closed her eyes, mumbled a last, "I love you, Melody," then decided to do it. She raised her other foot, the one with her other heel, and used all of her strength to slam down at wherever Melody was. She heard a snap, and the needle halfway through her shin stopped moving.
Melody's neck snapped. Her head laid near Ariel's foot. Ariel sat up,yelping from the pain in her ankles. She just stared at her now dead daughter and cried. It was all she could do. Cry and cry.
Just as she was about to stand, or try to, Melody moved. Her hand twitched. It instantly wrapped around Ariel's ankle, but her head stayed down. Ariel was in too much shock to move.
"Let's be mermaids together, mommy..."
Melody dug her nails into Ariel's skin, drawing blood. She slowly lifted her head, but it lolled to the side. Her eye was hanging out of it's socket, leaving just an empty black and bloody hole.
"Please."
