CHAPTER TWO:
ABOARD THE HOGWARTS EXPRESS

Thursday 1st, September 1994
Aurora stirred as the Hogwarts Express rumbled beneath her.
Her head rested against the cool glass of the window, fogging it slightly with each slow exhale. Outside, the sky was a sheet of dull grey, the rain hammering against the train in thick, relentless drops. The distant hum of voices mixed with the faint crackling of her cassette tape, still wrapped around her ears. The Clash was playing—a familiar comfort.
She blinked, adjusting to the dim light of the compartment. Across from her, Harry, Ron, and Hermione greeted her as she woke, their faces warm but concerned. She ignored their searching eyes, instead sitting up and tugging her sweater sleeves. The remnants of last night clung to her skin like unwelcome fingerprints—her parents' annual pre-school ball had ended the same way it always did: pain, whispered apologies to an empty room, and the cold, hard floor.
"How did you get that?" Harry asked, causing her brows to knit, he brought his knuckle up and gentle tapped her chin. "The small bruise there."
Aurora looked away from his knuckles and towards him, thinking of the bruise her grandfather had left on her last night. "Dragging my luggage out this morning, fell on the staircase."
"Looks sore."
"I'll survive Potter, don't worry."
Ron was rummaging through his trunk, pulled out his maroon dress robes and flung them over Pigwidgeon's cage,. "Bagman wanted to tell us what's happening at Hogwarts, at the World Cup, remember? But my own mother won't say. Wonder what—"
"Shh!" Hermione suddenly pressed a finger to her lips, her eyes darting toward the compartment next to theirs. Aurora fully took off her walkman, sitting up a little straighter, listening.
"...Father actually considered sending me to Durmstrang rather than Hogwarts, you know," She heard her cousin say,"He knows the headmaster, of course. Well, you know his opinion of Dumbledore—the man's such a Mudblood-lover—and Durmstrang doesn't admit that sort of riffraff. But Mother didn't like the idea of me going to school so far away. Father says Durmstrang takes a far more sensible line about the Dark Arts. Durmstrang students actually learn them, not just the defense rubbish we do..."
