Chaol followed you as you led him deeper into the streets of Rifthold, all tense and ready to fight anyone that dared attack you both. You happily hummed to yourself as you continued on, not even glancing at Chaol. Chaol was starting to wonder if something was mentally wrong with you, these streets are not the best to be walking down alone, especially for a woman.
When he had pointed it out, you snapped back by saying, "I was trained by many people, Chaol. Generals, commanders, captains, veterans, and alike. I honor them by using what they taught me, even if those moves give me scars."
Chaol's seen your scars, some were large and deep while others were small. Chaol snapped out of his daze when he heard shouting and cheering, he realized you brought him to a pit fighting arena. He grabbed your elbow and hissed into your ear.
"Are you insane?" You shrugged. "Celaena is insane, so why can't I?" You replied, giving him a cheeky grin.
                                                   Someone noticed you and cheered,
                                                   "The pit fighting queen!"
A small crowd grabbed you and dragged you away. You find yourself in the arena with a man thrice your size with your cloak off. Chaol never noticed how many weapons you hid underneath your cloak, whips, knives, daggers, and a single sword strapped to your back.
"Ooooh," You cooed, admiring your opponent. "Damn, you're a big fella, ain't ya?" You chuckled, your opponent yanked out a heavy chain while you tucked your hands behind your head. "Go on, big fella. Come at me."
Chaol was about to shout a cry to be careful but by the time the chain landed, you were gone. The crowd fell silent, then everyone heard a small giggle.
"Is that all you can do?" You cooed, Chaol tried to pick up where your voice was coming from but deemed impossible. "Show yourself, coward!" Your opponent snarled, a bomb was thrown down, fog covered the arena. "Oh, I'm no coward," you whispered into your opponent's ear then struck him down.

Chaol flinched when he heard screaming and your opponent screaming for mercy. The fog cleared up, everyone was whispering and murmuring at the sight before them. Your opponent hung upside down, blood dripping down his face, you had a dagger in your hand with a cold smile on your face. That wasn't a face Chaol recognized, this girl, he didn't know her at all.
"Kill him!" Someone shouted. "Kill!" The crowd chanted. "Kill! Kill! Kill!" Your grin widened. "You want me to kill him?" You shouted to the crowd. "Kill!" The crowd shouted back, your eyes met Chaol and you grinned at him as you slit your opponent's throat.
When you looked up again, Chaol was gone. He was far away from the pit, his back against the wall, head between his knees as he tried to digest everything he just saw. 'That's not her' Chaol thought. 'That's not her, she has to be there. The girl that I came to care for is still in there, I know it' he went on. 'No, no. She's not there anymore. She's. She's. She's a monster'
Chaol went back to the pit, he saw people handing you bags of gold coins with fresh cuts and bruises covering you. You took all the bags then went on your way. You entered a shop, Chaol was able to see what you were buying inside through a window and he was shocked to see bags of food, clothing, and other necessities.
Chaol continued following you, he frowned when you entered an abandoned warehouse. Chaol stood outside the open doors, then heard,
                                                        "Y/n's back!"
A large group of children rushed towards you, bombarding you with hugs, squealing.
You laughed as you hugged each child back.
"I know, I know. You all missed me, I missed you too," you said. "What'd you bring for us this time, Y/n?" A little boy asked, clinging onto your back, being very careful with your sword. "Well," you said, going through the many bags. "I have shirts, trousers, shoes, bread, and some pastries," you grinned, pulling out many boxes of pastries making the children squeal.
You didn't go to the pits for fun, you did it to help these kids survive, Chaol realized, he peered inside to get a better view on you handing out equal amounts of each item. One of the children noticed Chaol.
"You were followed!" He cried out. "I know," you said. "Get your ass here, Chaol. I need your help to hand these out."

So Chaol did. The children were pleased to find out he was a friend of yours. Chaol was shocked to see makeshift beds all around the warehouse and to see you going around kissing each child's forehead.
"I provide these kids home, food, and clothing through fights," you told him. "I was a bastard too when I was younger, I learned how to steal, lie, and manipulate at a very young age. I did everything I could to survive until I caught a soldier's eye, he saw me fighting off three grown men. He took care of the third one and offered to have me trained. He offered not just training, he offered food, water, shelter, and clothing so I agreed. After leaving him, I continued seeking out further training until I ended up here, I saw how the captured children were treated after getting caught stealing so I paid whatever they stole and bring them here. I offer them a home, food, and clothing while I did the dirty work. So, now you know why I do this, I don't do this for pleasure."
                                                              Chaol said nothing.
"How long have you been doing this?" He asked. "Five, six years. Maybe even longer," you said. "Why?" You asked. "There's a position opened in the King's guard. We can use someone like your talent," Chaol offered. "You don't need to fight people in the fights, you don't need to have more blood on your hands," you stared at your hands, a war raging in your head. "Do it," a little girl piped up. "I don't like seeing you hurt anymore, Y/n. Please take the job." The little girl pleaded, more and more children started to chorus their pleads. "Do you promise the children will be fed and well cared for?" You asked. "I'll see to it myself," Chaol swore. "Then I accept your offer, Captain."
