{ in which the last words of your soulmate would be tattooed on your wrist. }
"mummy, what are those words on your wrist?"
five year old lisa questioned, her fingers tracing the words "i'll be back home soon." on her mother's left wrist. lisa looked up to see her mother with teary eyes and a heart breaking smile.
"soon, darling, you'll know soon."

even until now, as lisa sat in a quiet corner of the café with her cup of cocoa, the curiousity still lingers at the back of her mind.
she sighed, and her gaze landed on a pine tree covered in white snow. it was a small one, just a little larger than the bench it stood beside. strangely enough, it was the only tree on this street.
why was she only noticing this tree today? lisa sat in the spot almost every morning and was sure she'd memorised every in of the view from the windows.
softly, she settled the cup on the table and strolled outside towards the tree. it wasn't visible from far, but the tree was decorated with several small notes, a pleasant shade of pastel pink.
she read the beautiful handwritings, going around the tree as she did so, but her feet stopped on a certain note.
"the person who reads this is beautiful." it read, and a tiny heart shaped charm hung next to it.
lisa wasn't sure why, but her cheeks were flushed red and her lips were curved into a smile. she hadn't realised that being called beautiful actually felt this amazing.
•••
when the sky was dark and the air was cold, lisa found herself wide awake. she tossed and turned around on her bed, and after hours she figured out that taking a walk outside wouldn't do much harm.
she circled around the neighbourhood, her feet carrying her to places she didn't recognise. it wasn't long before lisa stopped near her favourite café, in front of the same pine tree.
this time, however, there was a petite brunette kicking her feet around in the snow at the foot of the tree. she held a stack of notes in her small hands, shivering in the cold as she continued to scribble on them.
lisa watched the girl intently, and she wondered how on earth can somebody look so beautiful and cute at the same time.
as the girl hung the last piece onto the tree, she rubbed her hands together and blew into it, before turning her head to face lisa.
"are you going to keep watching me?" she chuckled, tucking her cold hands into her coat.
lisa bit onto her bottom lip, she didn't realise that the girl was aware of her presence the whole time.
"i-i was u-uhhh,"
"what's your name?"
"it's lisa." lisa breathed out, in absolute awe of the girl.
"and i'm jennie."
•••
as lisa lay on her couch, with jennie wrapped warmly in her arms, she couldn't help but to grin like an idiot, a soft giggle escaping from her lips.
jennie pinched the tip of lisa's nose, "what's so funny?"
"nothing," lisa sighed contentedly, "i just love being like this with you."
lisa didn't expect to meet her soulmate next to a tiny pine tree decorated with small notes, neither did she expect jennie to confess to her two months after that.
"merry christmas jennie, i love you."
"merry christmas."
