Goku and Vegeta. One of the most iconic rivalries in manga and anime. However, as with all rivalries, only one stands atop the other, and in this case, that is Goku. But why? Why is Goku always head of Vegeta?

Today, I will be answering that question!

To answer this question, we have to look at each character's childhood. Although both were from the same planet and were the same race, their childhoods were polar opposites.

In Dragon Ball, we see Goku learning to train his body and mind as well as learn a plethora of techniques. Through the guidance of several masters, Goku is given a foundation of knowledge of his body and how to train effectively and efficiently at a very young age. This foundation is the key reason why he's ahead of Vegeta at all times.

As for Vegeta, he grew up as a soldier in Frieza’s army. From birth, his destiny was sealed by his power level. Although we don't know what Kid Vegeta’s power level was, you can infer that since Bardock, a common Saiyan, had a power level of 10,000 in the Bardock Special that a Royal Saiyan like Vegeta have around the same power level as well as a child. So, yes, as children Vegeta was light years ahead of Goku. However, skip ahead to the meeting between the two, we know that Vegeta had a power level of 18,000. In the span of possibly 15 years since the Saiyan Genocide, Vegeta’s power level had risen only 8,000? This is because Vegeta grew up on the battlefield, growing through Zenkai boosts rather than training. Thus, creating a different foundation from Goku.

Meanwhile, Goku had gone from a power level of 416 to “OVER 8,000” in a year. A jump that exponential is mind boggling. Not only that, he also learned more techniques and ways to multiply his power. Again, this is with one year of TRAINING.

When we move to the Frieza Saga, Vegeta is constantly relying on Zenkai boosts to get stronger while Goku is training in 100x normal gravity to get stronger. Because of this, the gap between the two grows even more.

Come the Cell Saga and Vegeta has begun training, but it's how he's training that really allows Goku to leave Vegeta in the dust. He trains non stop until he's collapsed of fatigue. As a former athlete myself (3 years of select basketball), I know that this is a HUGE mistake. Why? Because when you train non stop, you're not letting your body rest. During the resting stages is when your muscles actually become stronger. Adding insult to injury, Goku spent a year training with the Yardrats to master Super Saiyan and learning Instant Transmission.

Later on in the Saga, when training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Vegeta comes out after more than a year’s worth of training only being able to reach Grade 3 Super Saiyan while Goku come out in less than year having fully mastered Super Saiyan. Why? Because he trains effectively and efficiently while Vegeta goes until he collapses.

Then we get the 7 year time skip where Vegeta lives in a Gravity Chamber, trying to get stronger while Goku is in the afterlife training with masters and learning more about Ki Control and his body.

Skip to the Resurrection F Saga and Vegeta FINALLY begins to learn from a master, Whis, and FINALLY becomes equals with Goku. However, this doesn't last for long. Why? Because whilst training with Whis, Goku rests while Vegeta over trains. Thus allowing Goku to maximize his results and slaughter Vegeta’s chances at surpassing Goku.

In conclusion, Goku's foundation of training and Vegeta's lack thereof is why Goku is always ahead of Vegeta.

I hope you learned something and enjoyed reading the post! Have a great day! Tell me what you think in the comments!
