Field Trip Buddies -- Short Story 5

••••••••••••••••

Most students, whether in elementary or high school, enjoy the chance to go on a field trip.

You get away from school, you can hang out with friends, and have no homework.

It's great.

For most students.

See, at my school we have a rule to keep things under control. First year, (grade 9) you have to pick a partner to sit with on the bus and the two of you use the 'buddy system' throughout the field trip.

The problem with that is that nobody told me you had to have that partner for the next 4 years.

I missed the partner picking day, thinking it wasn't a big deal, and being in a friend group of 5, I was left out and stuck with the next kid who had no partner.

Turned out a boy I had never even heard of in grade 9 needed a partner.

Lucky me.

I didn't know him and he didn't know me. Field trip after field trip though, I've gotten to know him and let me tell you,

He's terrible.

Between the constant gum chewing and bubble blowing, he's always squirming on the bus and takes off from me every chance he gets.

That last thing doesn't bother me one bit. We could be on the bus leaving without him and I probably wouldn't mention my buddy was missing.

Now don't get me wrong, he's not a bad kid. We could actually be friends if it wasn't for that fact that we can't stand each other.

The hate goes both ways.

He can't stand me.

I could say worse things about my feelings for him.

Walking up the steps of the bus, I took my usual seat beside the window and waited for my so-called 'buddy' to arrive.

Maybe he'll miss this field trip.

I erased the thought, hoping for that to be real was silly.

Nicholas never misses a field trip.

Adjusting my earbuds, I looked out my window as the rest of my classmates piled onto the bus.

They sort the buses by homeroom, so with my luck, my friends have a different one and are on the other bus.

The added weight on my seat told me Nicholas made it.

Awesome.

"Want a piece of gum?" I took out an earbud to be sure he was talking to me, "Yes or no?" He waved the pack in my face.

"No thanks." I focused on my music again.

"It's really good." He made me pause my music again.

Did I mention before that he loves to bug me? The hate may go both ways, but he's lightened up in the past year and instead of throwing insults, he pesters me.

"I don't want your nasty gum." I grumbled, debating turning up my music even louder.

"It's delicious actually. See?" I looked over to see his wad off gum hanging out of his mouth.

"You're disgusting." I pushed myself closer to the window.

"It's our very last field trip ever. Can't you pretend to like me for once?" I felt the seat vibrate from his laughter.
