Chapter 14
“That's the last of it,” Doctor Drool announced, pushing the IV stand away. The bag of liquid drugs now bone dry. Just like me.
Well, almost.
Turning around to face me again, he removed one of many needles from my arm. I barely felt the tug on my vein. Actually, I barely felt anything anymore. Without food or water as he bled me dry, I knew the only reason my heart still managed to beat at all was out of sheer, brute determination to stay alive.
Just like I always said...I was simply too stubborn to die.
For the first time since I woke up in this hell, the constant haze that had swallowed me whole started to lift. No longer being pumped full of drugs to keep me docile and quiet like a good little victim, my hateful attitude returned with a vengeance – even if I was too weak to speak.
Sensing the change, Drool frowned. “You know, it didn't have to be like this. A normal person's body can be drained of blood in mere minutes without much suffering, especially if you're using a pump. Then again, there's nothing normal about you, is there Chaos? How you managed to fight the process this long, is a complete mystery to me.”
He meandered slowly over to the machine. Studying the gauges, he read the results out loud. “Less than fifteen percent of your blood left to collect, and then it's lights out for you.” He gave the machine a pat. “When I'm finished here, I can finally return to my laboratory to start working on the cure. Early tests have been very impressive. Very impressive, indeed.”
Pausing momentarily to switch collection containers, he faced me holding up a large clear cylinder filled to the brim with deep scarlet blood. Judging from the crazed look in his baby blue eyes, you'd think he was holding onto liquid gold.
“I'm going to go put this on ice. When I get back, the real fun begins.” Confusion must have been plain on my face. Grinning like a mad scientist, he added, “I get to perform an autopsy on you so I can remove your organs one by one in order to study them. The mystery behind what makes you so unique is locked in your cells, just waiting to be discovered.”
Any hope I had of making it out of this alive, and in one piece, dwindled as he exited my fortress of doom.
Before long a male voice, sounding as if it came from far away, penetrated the silence. Soft at first, the voice became increasingly more urgent, until I couldn't ignore it even if I wanted to.
I strained my earns, listening to the desperate plea. “Chaos, please answer me. Where are you?”
Unable to process exactly where the voice had come from, I recognized the owner almost immediately. The name died in my throat. “Sebastian?”
“Chaos!” he screamed, voice booming in my head. “Hold on, I'm coming to get you.”
I scrunched my eyebrows tightly together, wondering how he had just heard me. Especially when I couldn't force his name past my cracked lips.
“Don't worry about why you can hear me,” he scolded. “Our minds must be somehow linked together.”
Had he and I formed a bond without me even realizing it? God I hoped not. Otherwise, Thomas was going to be pissed.
“Who's Thomas?” Sebastian asked, voice echoing loudly in my ears.
I sucked in my breath.
“Never mind, it's not important. I got a bad feeling when you didn't come back, so I went looking for you. By the time I reached Gonzer's office, I saw two police officers loading you into an ambulance. The driver took off before I could find out where they were going. Just tell me where you are, Chaos, and I'll come get you.”
