"Sherlock?" asked John through the phone, slightly breathless.
"John you're interrupting my mindpalace search. This case is monumental and-aren't you supposed to be researching right now-"
"Shut up, just shut up for one second." Sherlock crinkled his eyebrows. John had said shut up with a different tone than Sherlock was used to, it was almost happy. "Come to the hospital."
"Are you hurt? Who hurt you?"
John sighed. "Nobody is hurt Sherlock. Mary, she's in labor." Silence. "Hello?"
Little did John know that Sherlock had already hung up, hurrying to get to the hospital as soon as possible.

He arrived just as the head of baby Watson was crowning through her cervix, and he paced in the hallway nervously. Eventually they wheeled her out, John following behind. Mary was dazed, jacked up on pain reliever, but she smiled as she went past Sherlock. John walked up to him, the biggest smile Sherlock had ever seen was planted on his face. "It's a girl. Her name is Rosie." John turned to follow Mary and the doctors. Sherlock watcheed him walk away with his future, happy for his fellow companion. But when John didn't hear footsteps behind him, he turned around to find the detective still standing there. "Well don't you want to come meet her?" he called to Sherlock.
Sherlock nodded, happier than he'd ever admit that he was included in the family. He followed them to a room where Mary was being helped into the bed. Soon after, a tiny crib was wheeled in with a little bundle laying in it. The nurse lifted it and placed it into Mary's arm, who looked down lovingly, John by her side. A happy family, Sherlock deduced.
John looked up. "Sherlock you can hold her if you want."
"No."
"Don't you want to hold your goddaughter?"
"If I'm being honest, no."
"Just hold her," grumbled John, grabbing Sherlock's arms and arranging them so Rosie would be able to lay safely in them. Mary, who was smiling giddily at her little bundle of joy, handed her to John and watched as he walked her carefully over to Sherlock. "Ready?" asked John.
"No, did you not hear me bef-" Sherlock was cut off by the tiny sounds coming from the tightly wrapped blanket now in his arms. He looked down, her red cheeks ablaze, dark eyes looking around. "Well aren't you," he paused, "new."
"Well, they are called newborns for a reason," mocked John, going to sit by Mary on the bed and hold her hand.
Sherlock rolled his eyes, then continued gazing at her tiny features. Suddenly an idea popped into his mind: could he deduce babies? He inspected her, his mind at work. Cute, child, cute child, innocent, new...
"Are you deducing my child?" asked John, recognizing the closely analyzing look in Sherlock's eyes.
"Of course."
"And what are your conclusions?" asked Mary with a chuckle.
"That she will be a great young prodigy for me to mentor once she grows and can support herself physically and mentally. For now she is held back by the confines of childhood."
"Yes, it is a shame she wasn't born as a crime solving adult like yourself," remarked John.
"Well we all have our flaws. At least hers is not as bad as yours."
"And what is my flaw exactly?" asked John, standing from the bed. Mary pulled on him arm to give him a warning look, and John scrunched his face up in frustration.
"That is between Rosie and I," said Sherlock.
"Give me my child," laughed John, itching to hold his baby girl again. He went to receive her back in his arms, but Sherlock turned his back on him
"I'm not done holding her John," said Sherlock. He ended up holding her for much longer than he, or anyone else, thought he would. Eventually he gave her up, but only when the nurse came in after John pressed the call button because Sherlock wouldn't give her back. The nurse took little Rosie from his arms so Mary could feed her, and for the rest of the night Sherlock sat in the corner in a pout, that is until he got to hold her again.
