Sophie's POV
The worst thing in the world is being ignored. I mean...sitting right next to someone who doesn't know you exist. Which...happens to me all the time. Robbie Kay. Every girl in the school wishes he was their boyfriend, but he's totally oblivious. He's friends with pretty much everybody, excluding me. But no one is friends with me. At lunch, I sit by myself with my hood covering me as I read. I'm always in the corner, away from everyone. That's not to say I don't wish I was friends with people. Of course there are people I'd love to hang out with. And just like every other girl, there's nothing I want more than for Robbie to call me his girlfriend.
I sit next to him in a couple of classes, which is more than most girls can say. That doesn't mean we talk though. In fact, in those classes, he seems about as shy as me.
"Now, being that President's day is coming up-and that I'm too tired to grade individual essays and assignments-your only homework this week is to write an essay about a famous speech, or quote, from one of our presidents. You'll work with partners and-" Without letting the teacher finish, all the girls in the class were throwing themselves at Robbie. Not only is he cute-seriously, seriously cute, but he's also the best history student in the school. "Wait, wait, wait! Let me finish. You'll work with the person that sits next to you." Amanda, who sat to the left of Robbie, smiled at him. "I mean the person immediately next to you. NOT across the isle." Amanda pouted and my eyes widened. I'd be working with Robbie. I bit my lip, trying desperately not to cry. Usually, I worked alone. Nobody ever wanted to work with me and I was always perfectly happy not having to do all the work. But now I was getting forced into a partnership. It'd be worse than doing the work while a partner sat home doing nothing. Robbie always does his homework and he's always happy doing his part in a group assignment. And he didn't just do his part and combine it with his partner's work later either. If it was a group project, he completely intended to do it in a group. If you had a job, he'd sit at your job and ask you questions and such as you worked. If you were sick, he'd call to work on it over the phone. I had to talk to Robbie. I had no choice.
"Looks as if we're partners then.", Robbie said, turning to me. "Perfectly fine by me. You're one of the few that won't make me do everything.", he said, lowering his voice so no one else would hear. I just nodded, keeping my head hidden in my hoodie. "You don't have to be shy, you know."
"I'm not shy. I'm just...anti-social. This school is filled with morons I'd rather not deal with.", I said.
"Should I take that offensively? I'm not one of those morons, am I?"
"No. You do your equal share of work in group projects, you pay attention in class, you know when to leave someone alone, you don't feel joy over someone else's pain, you work hard to get what you want; so no, you're not one of the morons."
"Hm...good to know you think so highly of me."
"I just think you're a better person than everyone else in this school."
"I guess I have noticed how you tend to distance yourself from everyone. Why? They may be jerks but...everyone needs a friend or two." I didn't answer, returning to my unhappy silence. At the end of class, I slung my backpack over my shoulder and practically ran out of the room. "Wait! Wait up!", Robbie yelled, catching up to me. "Geez, you're fast. Hey, if you're not doing anything later, why don't you come to my place to start on the project?"
"Um..."
"Here.", he said as he handed me a slip of paper. "Just...text me if you decide on coming, alright? I'll see you later, Sophie." And he left. I looked down at the number on the sheet of paper. I closed my fist around it tightly. I felt as though I needed to protect it, which isn't totally crazy. All the girls in this school would kill someone for Robbie's number.
