My dad dropped me off in the front of the house and patted my back as I climbed out of the heated car. He sped away and I anxiously watched him, wondering if Callie was walking around the streets he drove on, cold and alone. I hung my head low and turned to walk up to the front door. I noticed there was something on my car as I headed up though. It looked like a clothing piece or a rag. I shrugged as I picked it up, analyzing that the shirt was Callie’s. Maybe she came back I thought, looking towards the house. I wasn’t going to take the chance of being wrong and decided to look for Callie myself. I shoved her shirt into my coat pocket and hopped in the car.

Quick decisions like this usually got me in trouble, but my heart was pounding and Callie’s shirt felt like it weighed 8000 pounds in my pocket. She needed me and I made a promise to Jude that I’m not willing to break.

The streets were dark, and very little cars drove alongside of me. My phone had rung almost 5 times in the past ten minutes so I put it on silent and shoved in the glove compartment. I knew it was my mom or Lena, but I really couldn’t be bothered right now. I had my decision set on Callie, and only Callie.

Midnight rolled around and I was soon pulled over by a cop. “Brandon Foster, your mothers are looking for you,” one of her co workers scowled as they walked up to my open window.

“Yeah not surprised,” I replied, throwing my head against the seat behind me. “Can you tell her I’ll be home in an hour?” I asked.

“She said now. If you don’t go, I’m going to have to force you.” The cop’s voice was hard and stern as if he was talking to a criminal. I sighed and clenched my hands around the wheel of my car.

“Fine,” I grumbled, starting my car back up and driving around the cop and towards home.

When I got through the door I was met by my moms’ eyes. They were glaring at me just like that cop had. “Brandon Foster.” Lena’s voice was barely audible but it was so strict and angry that I felt like melting. I gulped and nodded, stepping forward and setting my keys down on a side table.

“We’ve already got Callie missing. Don’t you dare go off on us too,” my mom cried, her blue eyes seeming almost red with anger. I looked down at my feet embarrassed.

“I wanted to help,” I breathed, my chest falling heavily as I let out air.

“We’ll find her, but you can’t just ignore us and go off on your own looking for her. We’ll handle that.” Lena smiled gently out of empathy.

“No, I’ll help.” I was surprised by the authority in my tone. “It’s my fault.”

“B, what do you mean it’s your fault?” my mom asked softly, stepping towards me causing me to back away. My head spun and I didn’t know whether to lie or tell the truth.

“I got mad at her, and I um,” I gulped. “I told her that I didn’t want her here anymore.”

“Brandon!” Lena yelled. “This isn’t just about Callie right now, it’s about all of us! You could get us in trouble do you know that? All of you could be taken away from us if we’re seen as unfit parents!”

“I’m sorry,” I whispered, fighting off the urge to tell the truth. The truth was that we kissed though and that would end up with Jude and Callie out of our lives forever. “There’s something else,” I added.

“What is it?” my mom demanded.

“I found this.” I reached into my pocket and pulled out Callie’s tattered shirt.

                “Brandon,” my mom whispered horrified.

“Mom this is good, it’s her shirt!” I said, confused as to why she was frightened.

“No, do you see this,” she held up the bottom of the shirt and there was a whole with blood around the rim in a shape of a knife.

                What if Callie was murdered?
