"I don't think you're ready for this. If it were up to me, you wouldn't be going at all." Her voice was harsh, her words poisonous as she glared down at you.
You didn't answer, just let her vent. If she really were going to stop you from beginning your mission, she would have. She was just trying to degrade you one last time.
Her eyes narrowed. "If it were up to me, you would be out on the streets."
You couldn't help yourself. "Well, I already will be, won't I?"
Without missing a beat, she whipped her hand across your face. Involuntarily, you touched your cheek, more surprised than hurt. "What did I tell you about mouthing off, girl?"
"I'm sorry," You murmured, looking away.
"You know if he didn't request you specifically, you wouldn't be alive right now. You should be kissing the ground I walk on."
Pretentious bitch, you thought, but you only said, "Yes, ma'am." She glared at you expectantly. "Yes, Madame Lilith."
Her eyes flashed. "Better. Repeat your instructions."
"I am to infiltrate the Winchesters, specifically Sam. I will earn his trust, expose him to the powers he can use by drinking demon blood, and get him ready to kill you. Since Dean's soul has been taken to Hell, I will use the loss Sam feels to my advantage. I will help Sam free our King, Lucifer."
Lilith grinned. "And one more thing."
You tried not to let the confusion stain your face; you didn't want to be slapped again. "Yes?"
"You will pose as the demon Ruby."
"I don't understand-"
She held up a hand, silencing you. "Ruby is the only demon that the Winchesters have ever come close to trusting. As far as they know, she is still alive." The glint in Lilith's eyes told you this was no longer the case. "Go to Sam, tell him you are Ruby. No one will be able to tell the difference, least of all Sam. The ticket to your survival is successfully tricking them. Do you understand?"
You nodded. "Yes, ma'am."
"What is your name?" Lilith tested.
"I am... Ruby," You finished, hating the way the name tasted on your tongue.
"I would leave now, girl, before Sam finds someone else to comfort him." With a final smirk, she smoked out, leaving the carcass she rode to flop at your feet.
You sighed, rubbing your nose with your thumb and forefinger before following suit. How the hell did you get yourself into this mess?
Personally, you liked traveling without a meat suit the best. For the most part, other demons found comfort in having a body, but you liked the freedom only your smoke form could bring. You flew, tearing through the air to the location Lilith told you.
As you were told, another demon was waiting for you in a sleazy hotel parking lot, expecting your arrival. He waited, gripping an unconscious woman, and you dove inside her. As usual, it took you a few seconds to feel your way around her body, but you soon stood on your own. It didn't take very much effort to subdue the woman's thoughts.
"Let's go," You told your companion. He knew only the basics of the operation- you would both attack Sam when he wasn't expecting it. What he didn't know was why, or that you would turn on him.
You marched in, looking through every room to find Sam's. Finally, you found one with a bag that contained his clothes and weapons, but no Sam.
"You said he would be here," The demon grunted.
"Well, he isn't," You couldn't help but remark. "So, we wait."
You did, crouching in the dingy darkness. The lights of the hallway flickered, but you remained silent. Finally, after what seemed like hours, Sam burst in, swaying like he was drunk.
You took the opportunity and pounced. The other guy punched Sam square in the jaw, drawing a grunt from the hunter, and held him for you.
You grinned, reaching to the pack of his jeans where you knew he would keep Ruby's knife. Part of the recon for this mission was investigating everything about Sam, so it didn't surprise you when your hand clamped around the handle. You knew that's where he would stash his weapon.
Jerking it out, you said, "Thanks for keeping this warm for me, Sam."
He got your hint. "Ruby." The hatred in his glare made even you want to cower in fear, especially since the hatred wasn't even supposed to be directed towards you.
Hiding your slight unease, you smirked. "It's nice to be back. Where I was... even for hell it was nasty," You improvised. "Imagine my relief when Lilith told me the way to earn her trust back was finding you and killing you." You gripped the knife, holding it to his throat.
He set his jaw, his expression wild. "Fine," He said, tearing away from the other demon, leaning into your blade. "Go ahead. Do it."
You stared at him for a few moments, narrowing your eyes. The pain in his eyes... you had never seen anything like it. Of course, part of your initiation was torturing people, so pain wasn't new to you, but Sam's was... different. Your heart would have lurched for him if you had one.
But you didn't, so you were emotionless as you drew your knife back and plunged it into the other demon's chest. Before collapsing to the ground, the idiot gasped as the yellow electricity fried his insides.
Sam turned to you, confused. He looked terrible. He was clearly drunk, and the dark red bags under his eyes were an obvious tell of the lack of sleep he had gotten. Once again, that nasty feeling of sympathy settled in your stomach.
You pushed it away, letting the anger at yourself leak into your voice. "Grab your keys, we've got to go," You ordered. He didn't move. "Now!"
Sam lurched into motion, pocketing the keys before running out the door. You followed, sprinting with him down the hallway. You both burst into the parking lot and he made for the impala. Thinking fast, you climbed into the passenger side before he could argue.
For about two hours, he drove in an angry silence, glaring at the road ahead.
You had tried turning on the radio, but he had turned it off immediately. Finally, the uncomfortable tension got to you and you said, "You know what sounds good? French fries." He didn't react, so you continued, glancing over at him. "You know, a thank you would be nice."
"Who asked for your help?" He retorted.
"You don't know what I've been through," You snapped back.
It was true. You had spent years watching Sam, learning everything about him. You had been tortured as part of Lilith and Azazel's test to see if you would be the right demon to break him. You had been chosen, which led to rigorous training that left you physically and mentally exhausted.
The worst part? You hadn't asked for any of it.
"You think Lilith is pleased that I've betrayed her? I'm a fugitive for you, Sam." That last part was true. Merely a handful of demons knew of your true alliance, so you would be facing hordes of worthless bottom feeders because of this mission. In almost everyone's eyes, you were traitor scum.
"Who asked you to save me?"
"I'm just trying to help," You countered, trying to funnel some emotion into your voice.
"Can you save Dean?" His voice broke.
Damn it, there was that pang in your stomach again. What the hell was it?
"No," You answered.
Jerkily, he pulled to the side of the road, turning to face you. "Then I have no use for you. Get out."
"What?" You feigned surprise. This is the kind of reaction you had expected from him.
"Whose body are you riding, Ruby?"
This did surprise you and you fumbled for a response. "A secretary."
He didn't miss a beat. "Let her go, or I send you right back to hell."
You glared at him. "Fine," You snapped, ripping out of the body.
You tore through the air, searching through local hospitals for comatose patients. No one was a good fit, either too old or too young, and you had almost given up until you found her.
She was marked as a Jane Doe, lying in a bed with all sorts of machines strapped to her. You would have passed her over normally, but something about her reminded you of a memory... a human memory. Maybe it was the slant of her eyebrows, or the pout of her lips, but she looked so much like your sister.
You didn't hesitate before diving into her. Because there was no one else to compete with, settling into her was quick and painless. It was almost like this meat suit was made for you.
You gasped, sitting up. The doctors that had been hovering around her body watched you, terrified. "Who do I have to kill to get some french fries around here?" You asked them, panting.
It took a day for you to get released, but once you did, you tracked down Sam. It didn't take long at all, especially since you knew his tendencies, and you found him in an abandoned house. You knocked on the door, listening to the shuffle inside.
He opened it and leaned against, the red bags still under his eyes as he glared at you.
"Proof," You offered, showing him the medical report detailing the coma the body had been in before the miraculous recovery, also known as you. "I recycled. Al Gore would be proud."
You walked in, brushing past him. "Why are you here?" He asked, following you as you made your way down the hallway, eying the disgusting walls with distaste.
"I can't bring Dean back," You began, glancing at him. There it was, that awful pain in his eyes. "But I can get you something else that you want."
"Huh," He huffed, crossing his arms on his chest and smirking at you condescendingly. "And, uh, what's that?"
"Lilith." Your voice was soft.
His eyebrows narrowed. "You want me to use my psychic... whatever?"
"Look, I know it freaks you out-"
"I'm ready," He interrupted. "Let's go."
Shocked, you snorted. You had expected a fight, months of proving yourself to him, but he was leaping on board so easily? How pathetic.
He misses his brother like you missed your sister, a small voice whispered in the back of your head, and you shoved it away.
"Slow down there, sweet cheeks," You answered, sitting down and taking a swig of whiskey from one of his almost empty bottles. "Lilith's one scary bitch and she's cooking up something nasty."
"So let's kill her," Sam argued eagerly.
"Oh, no. We are not half assing it this time. We've got one shot at this, so we're going to do it right."
"Okay," Sam conceded, taking the bottle from your hands and taking a long drag. "What do you want from me?"
"We're not doing anything until you're sober. Got it?"
He glared at you, not answering.
"Dean wouldn't want you to act like this," You prompted.
He stood up, slamming his fist on the table. "Don't you dare talk about Dean."
"Okay, fine," You snapped back, rising up from your chair. "You keep your reasons for this whole thing to yourself, but I want you on your A game for this, or we're going to fail. Again. You've got three days to get sober, Sam, or deal's off."
Sam nodded. "Okay, fine. No more whiskey."
"Good," You said, making your way to the door. Watching him go through detox was the last thing you wanted to do.
"What are you even going to teach me?" He called after you.
Slowly, you turned around, smiling. "Everything I know."
"And we're going to get her, right? We're going to make her pay for what she did to my brother?" The intensity with which he stared at you made you want to blink. You felt like you were staring into the sun.
"You're going to get your revenge, Sam," You promised, turning at shutting the door behind you.
