The alley was a study in wet asphalt and bad decisions, the faint hum of a neon sign the only witness. Calla crouched beside a crimson trail that broke into a single, perfect footprint. She lifted her micro-tablet, the soft blue light sharpening the details of the blood spatter as her camera clicked once, twice.

“I can tell you where he ran, what shoes he wore, how long ago he stepped in this mess—and what kind of cheap detergent he uses.”

She looked up, dark eyes catching the stranger in a steady, unblinking stare.

“What I can’t tell you is why you’re standing in my crime scene without gloves or a badge. So… want to explain before I start adding your tread pattern to my notes?”

Calla straightened slowly, tablet still humming in her palm. The rain-slick asphalt reflected just enough of the neon sign to paint a faint halo around him—wrong place, wrong time, she thought, and maybe not quite sure which was which.

Her gaze flicked over his shoes, cuffs, and the faint smell of espresso clinging to his jacket. Coffee shop checks out, but she didn’t lower her guard.

“Alright … “ she squinted her eyes just making out his name tag “Connor,” she said, voice even, the kind of calm that let every word cut clean. “Then you already know the drill—details matter. Start with what you heard before you stepped outside. Any sounds—arguing, engine, footsteps?”

            A beat.

“And while we’re at it, did anyone else linger after close? Co-worker, late customer, someone watching the shop? I need every sliver, even if it feels trivial.”

She angled the tablet just enough to capture his face in a quiet flash.

“Don’t worry. I’m not GCPD. No badge. Just need the truth before the uniforms arrive and trample the evidence.”

if there was a contest for consistently being in the wrong place at the wrong time, connor would have a gold medal. despite his flighty abilities, he managed to find himself at the scene of a crime, yet again, as a witness. this had happened just outside his job, still, in spite of knowing he’d never do such a thing; his stomach still twisted in knots.

he hated cops, but he hated detectives and their watchful eyes even more. one wrong move could lead to a hunch which could have him thrown in jail. he pauses, eyes meeting hers. he blinks, absentmindedly, in response to her stare.

“ i’m a witness— the crime happened just outside my job. i work at the coffee shop inside the building, i was closing and i came out to see this. i was told to come see you— answer any questions. ”
